I know George Lynch used Soldano for a long time. Also could I get that tone easy w/ a Mesa also??

No is the simple answer. Mesa a different beast.

I'd take the Soldano for jazz with a skin flute and the MESA for all else...since you didn't specify your genre, style or what tones you are going for. Neither is a "witch".

you can go either way, but your journey will be completely different depending on what you choose.

both amp companies have different philosophies for how to get you to what you need. all the mesas i've had (and i've had a lot) require massive tweaking and a bit of a learning curve to sound fantastic. the SLO style amps sound lovely no matter what you do but IMHO you end up with an amp with less overall options.

if you're looking for an 80s tone, why not start by doing some 80s homework, and see what both brands were offering then. use that as a blueprint for what was successful then and is still alive and kicking now.

you can't go wrong with either company in terms of quality. just gotta find what fits you better!

The 80's were all about Marshall amps were they not? G'nR Appetite for Destruction is a great example of a raw 80's sound. Modded JCM 800 perhaps?

Slash, Lynch, Demartini were all using Marshall's back in the day.

I am assuming you can afford it. Since I have both a Soldano and a Mesa specifically the SLO 100 and the Mark IIC+ I can tell you that the Mesa Mark IIC+ kicks the Soldano's ass. So go old and go Mesa.

Well I've had both, and just the opposite for me. But if I can ever find a Coliseum CII+ I will snatch it up. Really the only amp I really want anymore.

george used a recto in the mid 90s but i cant remember which tour.

George used one of the early DRs in the 1995 "reunion" tour.

And the SLO he used on the WS album (his tech swears that Lynch used the SLO very lightly on that album and instead used an older Plexi for most of the work

If I'm playing hair metal like Ratt or Dokken an SLO would be a great choice. If I'm playing metal like Nevermore, KSE, Alter Bridge, then it's a Recto all the way but boosted with a Tube Screamer.

Dream Theater = Mark Series.
