Kerry King is a hack huh? That's cute,AND he wrote one of the best metal albums of all time, and that was 20+ years ago and nobody has even come close to writing anything that brutal. That little band of girls you like so much would be writing dance music if Slayer wasn't around, please, don't compare the two,it's a waste of time and if anybody agrees with you they're a liar.

My son likes this band, but he still thought your play on their names was funny. There is an upside to this stuff: I've listened to Vai, Malmsteen, Satch, Dokken, Dio, et. al. around my kid for years, he never seemed to care much about them. He recently switched from bass to guitar and plays in one of these screaming mallrat suburban metalcore bands. Now I come home and find him watching youtube videos of Vai, Malmsteen, Satch, Dokken, Dio, et. al. It turns out he's not alone, as he and his guitar playing buddies talk about the 80's shredder gods and learning from their techniques. Retrograde influences, so to speak. So a lot of kids who are getting in to this new music are then discovering the 'old guys' because they want to reach a higher level of technical proficiency. I don't care for them myself, but it could be worse... If you don't think so, you obviously haven't heard Soulja Boy's Pretty Boy Swag.

ya but the tone on Tonic's lemon parade is horrible!
Hey now, that is one of my favorite albums of the 90's. And I am greatly in debt to If You Could Only See for all of the times it worked as instant panty remover. :D

Slayer has written some cool tunes...Kerry can knock out some cool rhythms but he can't play a solo to save his life. Beyond that you obviously didn't read my post as its clear you completely missed the point.

Agree 100% - KK just shouldn't solo.

I agree that his solos are b.s. but I kinda like em

How can you listen to the guitar and not give these guys credit for at least whipping up something different than is around today? Forget what they look or dress like, I think that point has been made at looking at some of our heroes from the 80s. I love the masters as much as the next guy but I'm thrilled to have someone throwing around some blazing guitar runs instead of chucking a drop d as fast as they can. Yeah Gus G is friggin amazing but I never heard any of that on the radio. Nice to hear it in the main stream. As guitar players, we can find all kinds of wizardry from all kinds of guys but the kids today need to see some good guitar out there to inspire them. Maybe this is a start.

the only decent guitarists that are around in todays metal scene are probably alexi laiho and that dude oli herbert....maybe even ryan knight
That might be true if your only exposure to the "metal scene" is through Saturday night Headbanger's Ball, but there are plenty of great guitarists around that can play circles around Alexi Laiho.

not really, i actually never watched that stupid fukin show

if you can name any, go ahead and name a few
For the record, I didn't intend for that post to come across as snotty and offensive as it sounds now that I reread it. Check out Andre Olbrich, Jeff Loomis, Michael Amott, Gus G, Tosin Abasi, Chris Broderick, Herman Li, etc... all of these are selected form popular metal bands too, not underground players. Alexi Laiho definitely has that '80s flare in his music that many guitarists don't have, which could definitely appeal more to people who are into the classic shredders, but there's so many players that are beyond that and are doing something interesting. I recently got into The Absence, and the lead player from that band does some insane licks on guitar I would've never thought of, but I don't know the dude's name.

I must say,Arch Enemy is one of my new favorite bands.
Gus G? Seems to copy a little of Zakk IMO

Dude From the 80's: Wahhhhhhh, no bands play solo's anymore!!! Oh wait, Avenged Sevenfold dresses like a bunch of 80's dudes, and play solos? They are gay, man!!!

Really? Excellent! I had only heard them after somebody posted about them on here with a clip or something, although I had heard of the band before. That latest CD has been on regular rotation in my car stereo for couple of weeks while I'm doing my delivery job.

Here's the thing about Avenged Sevenfold. I can pretty much guarantee you, no other band has done as much to familiarize this generation with the shred. Are the best band of all time? No. Are the guitar players the best? No, but they're leaps and bounds better than 90% of the players on the scene today, and better artists than 95% of the "artists" out there. Is their image, granted a throwback to the 80s, a bit over the top? It can be; they've toned down their image soooo much since their City of Evil days.

Avenged Sevenfold is unique because it can package technical playing into something that can be enjoyed by a wider audience. It's the closest thing to "pop metal" that's ever existed. A lot of people diss A7X because they feel like they're stepping on their idols' toes, even when icons like Metallica and Slash are great friends with A7X and have respect for them. They do their own thing, and for that alone they deserve respect. They're not afraid to think outside the box, and I think that's what makes them good artists. Many of you will disagree and cite one of the gods from whenever "there was real music", but that was yesterday and this is now. By today's standards, A7X stands above most of the other currently active bands out there.

there good players...

In the 80's there were Guys Like Al Demiola, and Holdsworth, who could play circles around popular players like Lynch , Dimartini, and other comparable 80's lightweights...

These guys are the same thing.. flashy guitar rock for a YOUNGER generation..it's all good! not super virtuosos (sp?) , but enough chops and flash to inspire young rock kids! Actually alot of there songwriting and arrangements are at alot higher level that Ratt and Dokken ever were....

I like current metal far more than early 80s metal. I never could understand how anyone could listen to Judas priest or Dokken? I would never be able to call them timeless. In fact that is about as stuck in time as you can get. I like Halford's attitude towards music but his shrills annoy the shit out of me. Motley Crue were sellout wannabees from the start and were much cheesier as far appearance goes then A7X. You can't get more ridiculous than 70s-80s metal for stupid outfits. I am a fan of A7X and have been since 2003. I was a huge metal head in the 80s but I focused on the heavy stuff. Venom, Possessed, Slayer, Sodom, Etc. Never was a fan of butt rock.

I disagree with them doing their own thing. They were an underground "metalcore" or whatever band for a long time, before City of Evil. Something happened and suddenly they became a household name and completely changed their sound and image. I don't like the toss around the word "sellout", but that's the first thing that comes to mind, although I can't blame anybody for it.

Yep they definely changed after the waking the Fallen. I was pissed at the time but now like the new stuff better. I don't know what they are gonna do without Jimmy Sullivan. He was a major factor in writing. Sellout is word I would use but in the same context as Metallica or Iron Maiden. I would choose more creative freedom, Arenas, and a life without a 9 to 5 job, over staying in a Metalcore box and playing empty club dates too.

Not doing their own thing? Just check out their self-titled album. You can't really put that collection of songs into any sort of category other than "eclectic" or conversely, "weird". What I mean by that is that they draw their influences from a much wider array and variety of genres than your typical rock or metal band, with the result being something not easily defined or held within one category, which is something else that I think pisses a lot of people off. I for one don't think that they're a metal band at all, although they do drift into that from time to time (God Hates Us).
