This surprised me

Oh I would never go to a DD concert.

I'd have went to this show though.

Dude's gotta a great voice. Never really did a dive into his work. Still, I am pretty much strictly a jazz, blues, and soul guy if I'm paying for seats unless we are talking about Boston or something I'm sentimental about although one time me and a friend went to a Kartik Sheshedri show but that is kind of a whole different experience.

Robert Palmer was a jazz, soul, blues guy bro. And the best dressed and probably coolest mother fucker on the planet at that time.

filling arena s for decades. not many blues or neo-soul musicians can.
McDonald's has sold more McRibs than Black's BBQ but McDonald's sucks ass. Popularity doesn't factor into whether I hold an artist in esteem but I used to get the same "Vanilla Ice gets laid more than you" shit in middle school when I was listening to Maiden and Hendrix.

I'll admit to liking Hungry Like The Wolf, The Reflex, Rio and the James Bond song they did. So I wouldn't say they suck, but I would never go to one of their shows or buy one of their albums. I did pick out the bass to Rio a few times over the years just because John Taylor is a complete bad ass.

I've told the story a few times over the years here so I won't repeat the deets, but I got to spend half an hour with the boys back in the mid '80s.

Andy loaded up on Vodka whilst everyone just chilled in the locker / dressing room.

They were all cool dudes and I sensed no ego issues, which IMHO was kinda-remarkable at the time given the extent of the female following.

On John Taylor:
Planet Earth was the first baseline I learned and I told him that. Doubt he was impressed 'though.

He did some free online video lessons for awhile. I watched several of them. He's fantastic.

I think all the original members of Duran Duran were very good. I never really liked Robert Palmer, that Addicted To Love video was on more than anything I remember on MTV, even Duran Duran.

The Cure and The Smiths are two of my favorite bands. Always liked '80s new wave; I certainly like it more than any blues after the mid '70s; after Hendrix died. A few of the real bluesmen continued on until they died which I respect.

FWIW, I think the blues have been over done since the 70s. Blues had bored me since the mid 70s.

Addicted to love and all that is Robert Palmer's turning point. It's like Kiss Dynasty/unmasked. Or Rush Subdivisions. Or AC/DC Flick of the Switch.

That is to say compared to the earlier shit, it sucked.

I like nearly all of Kiss; though after Psycho Circus, not as much. Creatures of the Night, Lick It Up, are some of my favorites.

Never listened to earlier Robert Palmer; I'm sure it's better, but his MTV pop era killed any interest for me.

People who say blues is boring are either guitarists who suck at playing blues or just people who failed to do a deep dive into the genre. There have always been quality artists but starting in the 2000's the amount of ancient hippies boring people at local bars with low energy stuff would lead most people to believe it was boring, because that kind of blues is. The other explosion was of the throwback relics...the fedora wearing, wingtip loving, bowling shirt donning cheesy white dudes trying to be t-bone walker. That stuff mostly sucks too. The number of clubs who turned into volume bitches also came into prominence at that time, which further squashed the level of excitement.

Unfortunately it is not a line of work that leads to a long life so a lot of the greats never made it past the 1980's.

Can’t stand 80s Kiss. And prior to that I was the biggest Kiss fan on the planet. Those first 7 albums or so still get play time around here.

sorry not buying the "blues skillz" argument. I saw Trower in the '70s on or after Bridge of Sighs. That was the last blues that interested me. I'd rather have sweep picking skills over blues boomer bending any day. Allan Holdsworth certainly transcended anything I've heard in the blues; IMO.

like jazz, beyond the top 1%, most can't make a comfortable living at it. can lead to early demise

I'd rather be wealthy playing hair metal in the '80s over being a starving artist.

IME the majority of players who came up in the 70's do not have the foundational approach to learning blues the way those who came up in the 60's and it shows, over and over. We have a dude running the local jam here who actually doesn't play a single blues song himself the entire night. I've gigged with, jammed with, or hired enough of those 70's era guys to know this. They are all rockers or blues-rockers (i.e not blues) nearly without exception. In fact my original guitar instructor had an attitude that blues was below him. Surprise, he still sucks at blues to this day.

The first words outta their mouth is always "blues is easy" followed by them failing to do anything creative or interesting beyond the third song of the night. I've heard that one line enough times to know that as soon as I hear it I know what comes next.

You are making a completely false equivalency here based on your own tastes and interests.

I think objectively, most would concur with Allan Holdsworth's skills being greater than most well-known blues guitarists.

Has nothing to do with my subjective opinion, tastes and interests. Please provide a blues guitarist you think is comparable to Allan Holdsworth, or some of the best rock guitarists EVH, Steve Vai, ...Jeff Beck transcended the blues, and could be a contender.

most chicks I ever seen at a show was hands down Motley Crue with Whitesnake opening in 87 ............ fucking spandex everywhere !!!

That is more my lane. My wife wanted to see Crue really bad this year and didn't ask me first but we're going

Of course, she doesn't know anything about the drama and Vince's voice etc - she just loves Motley Crue. I'm sure there will be a lot of MILFs there.
