Some parts were hit and miss but man it's rock and roll....... not opera. I thought this was a good performance.

Watched the first night last night...I thought is was really good! Dave is Dave....a great showman! So great to see Eddie doing his thing and doing it well as usual.
Alex was looking a bit tired behind the drums but still plays great as usual.

I dug it. I thought Eddie's guitar sound was really good - and I like Dave. Looks like they were having a good time. That's rock and roll in my book.

I agree. Everybody is bitching about Eddies tone???? Sounds just like Eddie to me. Plus, pretty good for a crappy live TV feed.

Dave, not so much. But then again, never been a big fan of Dave

I only watched Panama and it sounds like Van Halen to me. I like Van Halen.

BTW, when I reach for a VH disc these days, it's that recent one which I think is surprisingly stellar start to finish. I hope more studio stuff is on the way. You all need to get frosty

I thought it was entertaining. Some timing issues everywhere, not just DLR. Ed looked, sounded & played great. When he just sang in his lower to middle register Dave sounded fine, it's him trying to hit all the high stuff that he never sang in the first place that sounds like shit and has me scratching my head. Someone send him some bootlegs of circa 1977-1984 VH and let him practice a little. I'll probably still go see them though.

Just ask yourself, "was this better than Chickenfoot?"...

Yes.

That's not setting the bar very high.

I thought I would love Chickenfoot. I listen to the tunes and meh. But then I watch a live video and it's outstanding

I think they sound great.. and every fan should be happy that finally these guys are appearing in the media again after so many years of neglecting and disappointing everyone with nothing.. rock on

yeah...his tone on YRGM and Eruption sounds killer. Don't know what the problem is?

So:

Van Halen, a live rock band built around one of the greatest guitar players of all time, shuts down Hollywood Blvd and has thousands of people queuing to see them.In the process,The Jimmy Kimmel Show gets more requests for tickets than any other act in the shows history. Performing some classic hard rock tracks, with the guitar right up front of the mix, the guitar player sounds good and plays exceptionally. Although not exactly like it sounded back in 1977 on their debut album, his guitar tone is full, articulate and modern sounding. The performance is broadcast in glorious HD on network TV to millions of people around the globe. Although clearly ageing, the lead singer who has never been known as a great singer from a technical sense, looks fitter than ever and sings as well, if not better, than he ever has in a live situation. People in attendance are ecstatic , reporting that the mini concert sounded amazing when being there in person. On a second night, the hard rock guitar based band gets even more exposure to millions on network television. Trending on social media it's a PR master stroke as tickets for their North American tour go on sale.

All this in an environment where, allegedly, rock is dead but STILL the experts sitting behind their keyboards are not happy????? WTFH?!

Yes you have appoint, maybe I'm being too harsh...but c'mon, if the guy worked at it even a little he could be so much better. It seems like he doesn't care so I guess that's the part that bothers me a little. But still you have raised excellent points

I'm probably too much of a EVH fanboi because I never care who he is playing with up on stage. It was like the time on "That Metal Show" when Eddie Trunk tried to get Zakk Wylde to rate his favorite VH albums. He just put them in order and said that anything by Brother Eddie is great. :)

It was a live performance. You guys post your stuff on here. Who cares if guys can play Eddies stuff 'better' then him. Who in the fuck wrote it? Your clueless.

Let's not go this far please.... He is singing infinitely better here. Actually everything is a million times better:

I realize this is at their peak and they are young...

Infinitely? Not sure about that but much better. You can also find videos of that era where he's bad as any recent performance. He's not great singer and has never been.

Comparing the two versions of DTNA, I'd say infinitely applies, but as always, YMMV...

I've actually never heard a '79 performance where he sounded as bad as the recent stuff, but I haven't scoured the Interwebs, so who knows, maybe...

Personally, I think his album performances are very good and I like his voice - it fits the early VH stuff great, but that's just me. The guy has always had a very limited range, but he was pretty damn creative and was a great live performer in his prime.

He just got old like we all will and lost his voice - whaddaya gonna do, ya know? If it was me, I would stop performing live, but he seems to be having a hell of a time and completely oblivious to his vocal suckitude and somewhat silly-ass, quirky stage presence, so, hey, more power to him.

Ed's playing pretty good though, eh?

We agree more than we disagree.

And as far as I'm concerned your post puts it in a nutshell and should end the whole old vs new back and forth. Well said.
