What is more important to rock/metal tones?

The guitar or the amp?

I'm going with the amp.

Or would you say something else? Player? Pickups? Pedals? Plectrums? Production? Penis? Personality?

What you say? Doesn't have to start with a "P" I just got on a roll there

I'm looking for your opinions on what the single most important thing is. That thing being specific to rock and metal.

Amp. Fight me.

I like your thinking there, but can you divide up the rest of the 30% for me :D

id say 18% amp and 12% pickups. i listen to clips i did years ago and some of them i couldnt tell you which amp and guitar i used but i can always tell what speaker. mics are a big part of the equation too, maybe even more than amps and pickups

I just think 18% is too low for the amp IMO
Let's not worry about recorded tones - just getting the tone out the speaker is enough for now
