It's sad that old washed up bands still have an audience and that great new bands are struggling to make a living out of their music. That's how it goes I guess; most people just stick with what they were listening when they were teens. Sadly, nowadays, most teens listen to the craptastic music they hear on the radio and don't buy music at all, except for the shitty singles they download online.
But maybe those "great new bands" aren't really that great. Maybe just great to musicians, not the masses. I think what is sad is that the teens of today aren't intelligent enough to find the good music. Like all aspects of their life, they want instant quick gratification. Probably not entirely their fault though.
Also, maybe this very large crowd just like what the 80's were about. I can sum that up in one word......fun. Chicks, parties, cars, excess = FUN. Most music today isn't about these things. I think that is one reason why many of these fans have crossed over and are spending their money in the modern country scene.
I was going to reply to Joe, but my time will be better spent replying to you
There were great bands back in the days that never got any airplay either, but it seems you could still hear good bands on the radio. Nowadays it's just total junk, with the occasional good popular artist. I think teens today are far more intelligent in finding good music than they were back in the days. It's just that the ones that aren't really "music fans", or hardcore music fans, will just listen to whatever is playing on the radio, exactly like back then.
It's the same with 80's as it was with the 60's and 70's; people associate music with good memories of the past, whether it was old time rock and roll, hippie stuff, disco, or 80's glam rock.
