You have all that gear and you've never been in a band, and you don't even want to jam with a band!?? You are missing out, man, big time!
Missing out on what? Crappy local bars and clubs that "charge" you to play in their venue? To lug around a bunch of gear twice a week just to find out I was the only one to show up for practice anyway? To listen to retard excuses why bandmates can't show up/quit/don't like me/don't like our "direction?" Wow...... no F'ing thanks. I can do without all that crap in my life. Another thing, so if I played in some loser band now I'm "justified" to have lots of gear? Last time I checked, you can only play through one amp and one guitar at a time.... you only NEED one amp to play in a band.

My goals and enjoyment is much different in a lot of ways than most guitar players. For example. I would rather be a guitar TECH building the rig, dealing with the gear, and making sure everything works perfectly, than be the dingy long haired rock star out on the stage. Get my drift?

But in all seriousness I figured I'd catch some flack, since I fit the RT stigma to a Tee. Thats okay with me, I really enjoy collecting and playing at MY convenience. My "music" plans are that I am in the process of building a studio addition to my home and I'd like to start recording my own music by myself, and never have to leave home. That is becoming quite popular to do these days. Oh and of course, build cool rigs, and tinker with amps/guitars.

To be honest, when I see these dude's that have all of the top end gear in the world and they have never, ever played with a band...I feel a bit sick... it's seriously sickening to me...sorry, it just is. What a waste!

If it's just a couple guitars and amps, then it's all cool, but when their house looks like a guitar center.... it's just depressing.

You need to quit worrying about other people. We are supposed to live in a free society, where we can all work freely, and spend our earnings freely. If I choose to buy a top end amp and plug into it 4 times a year, that has nothing to do with you and is a waste of your time getting "sick" over it, energy wasted for zero reason.

This illness/jealousy syndrome is redicoulous ! ...seriously if a painter never has shown his work in a gallery should he not create anymore? instead of only seeing gut churning jealousy realize that most of these guys here work hard and support the builders/ forums for many it's an a joy to play a killer rig and get lost in the "basement" and be inspired and I've been in bands that made me want to quit playing so its not all unicorns and bukakki showers of skittle rainbows !

Who are you to judge? If you really feel a bit sick/depressed about this, please seek help... :jerkit:

God, some of you people need to take a pill. Overreact a bit?

You bedroom wankers get a bit offended? you'll get over it... and maybe this will give you some motivation to get in a band??

Overreact ? This thread went from gear to bands ratio to the plight of third world poverty guitarists and tummy rumbling ..it's all our moms faults for not booking a practice room for us losers with Diezels and les Paul's..please!

I don't think I overreacted at all, although you did.

And you are barking up the wrong tree calling me a bedroom wanker, because I've played tons of live shows of all original music in the 80s to as many as 5000 people (opening for Great White). I did my gigs when I was trying to get a band signed at an age where it was appropriate and possible to make rock music a living - not interested in that anymore at 55... I just like to play guitar with whatever ability I have left while I'm dealing with focal dystonia...

Also, I build amps, so I can justify as much gear as I can fit in my house, frankly... (as if I need to justify anything to anyone...) Gotta test 'em no?

Regardless, no one has to justify their hobby to you, and if it truly makes you sick that folks who haven't played live spend tons of money on cool gear, it's you who have the problem and not them... It's just a dumbass reaction, really...

I didn't direct that comment specifically at you... I directed it to anyone in that category. I just think it's a waste... I'm allowed that opinion, aren't I? No hard feelings dude. :)

I gotta admit...I am ENORMOUSLY STOKED that he gets physically sick knowing some people have worked super hard to afford the best toys for their given hobby.

C'mon, I can't be the only one who is honest enough to admit it.

Some would say it's a "waste" trying to reason with him or trying to help him. But that'd just be nasty and hateful.

I can see the ad now..... Just 50¢ a day can freed and get these poor children a killer rig.

cool thread. I play in a local band and am still looking for another (of a slightly different style). I've been in bands since high school, will probably always do it in some form or another until I am unable. the band dynamic - while always challenging - is one of the things I love most about being a musician.
I was a gear-hog in the 90's, then quit the acquiring/flipping game for a few years to get a grad degree and start working as a college-level faculty member. been back into getting-things-to-get-the-things-I-want-mode for about two years, and mostly feel like I am slowing down w/it - although I have 2.5 years of custom guitar orders coming 'round the bend ;)
to afford it...I've bought and sold a lot of great gear since the late 80's, been pretty careful, pretty lucky, and have been able to continue to rotate a bit of money for my habit. that said, it's a dark and stormy rabbit hole... and I need to be more disciplined; I echo the sentiment (iterated above) that doing what you love is key.

Hey, these little buggers need to experience the circle of life themselves - Having shit gear and being able to play your ass off to finally being able to afford all the stuff you dreamed of when you were young, only now you can't play worth a fuck cause you spent all your time working to buy the stuff. It's one of God's ol' belly laughs.

sounds like jealousy if you are not joking about this

Hell no, i'm not jealous. I got all the gear I need. It just seems like a waste is all...
So...tell us more about your life and personal hobbies so I can make judgments about them and tell you how you should live your life.

I have way more amps and guitars than I probably need, but after giving up hookers and blow I needed something to occupy my time and money. It's a healthy obsession and I've worked hard to have the means necessary to do it.

I haven't played in a band in over 10 years and honestly have no desire to do so now. So have fun playing at your local dive bar to 6 people this weekend. Maybe one day I can say I knew ye back when you were just a nobody on a gear message board.

It doesn't make me stoked but I have to admit, I laughed at your post.

Lets dive in a bit deeper just for fun.

Soooo..... If you have tons of cool gear, but you are in a band, it's just totally awesome. If you have tons of cool gear but don't play in a band you're a disgrace to humanity.  Okay....

1. Don't most guys that gig on a weekend basis with a band build a rig that fits well to that band's musical style, cuts through well, and meshes with the other guitar player's rig and then sticks with that setup because it works night after night?

2. A home studio guy that just does his own thing on his own time that has all the time needed to make his own music and that likes to mix different flavors of amps/guitars/pedals together for fun with his own music and recordings...

Which guy would benefit more from a well rounded pallet of gear?

3. I realize that for a lot of guys, playing in a band, guitar, and music is their hobby period and dedicate a lot of time to it. But I do know there are a number of us that have other hobbies too. Bands take up a TON of time, time I'd rather spend enjoying my other hobbies. I like guitar/music, but I like two other hobbies just as much and don't want time taken from them. Guitar isn't the be all end all hobby for some of us, like it is for others.

4. Hot and cold phases, again... I know there are die hards out there, but I think a lot of us go through hot and cold phases with gutiar/music. Personally, when I'm in a hot phase with guitar, I spend a lot of time playing and joining a band sounds more intriguing, but when those cold phases come I am glad I am not tied down to something like that and am able to pursue other hobbies that I am hot on at that time.

Enjoy life as much as you can.
Play guitar. Buy what you can afford/enjoy.
Have fun. WHOGAS what anyone else thinks!

I play a once a week gig. I get paid $100/gig. It's fun and the gents I play with are way cool!
I record in the summer months when I am on holidays doing some contract work which I have done for years. It is a changing industry because more and more I don't have to go to the big studio and instead, I can work from home and submit my pieces as samples and they do whatever they want with them.

Would I miss doing this? Nope. I envy the guy at home with all of those great amps to enjoy and listen to. One of my good friends is like that. Very well off and he has so many amazing amps to have fun with. Can't play all that well but the smile on his face is always priceless when he turns it up. To me, that is satisfaction.

Get a grad school degree and a good job, and buy all the gear you want.

I love hearing people get sick over the amount of gear others have.

The first step to getting rid of stupid is to admit you have it. So let it out and let it go.

And this year I hope to get a decent bonus, and spend lots of it on gear.

Feeling sick yet?

Maybe a 5th LP, or a nice Splawn SuperSport. Steve K always has good used gear for sale...

Choices abound.

Where do we sign up for the Gear For The Children? Is Sally Struthers available?

Cause somewhere out there is a kid with enormous talent in a poverty stricken country, but he can't afford to get the gear he needs to get into a decent band. He's someone that wants contribute, ya know? instead of being a douche and just playing their LP and Diezel in front of their mirror in their moms basement... I don't understand why anyone would buy that kinda gear just to play alone in their basement? just seems like a waste. Like a Porsche sitting in a garage collecting dust... such a shame.

I have a bunch of high end amps about 25 guitars AND a Porsche in the garage and currently not in a band, does that make me a super douche?
Thanks for your input....FWIW I do not live in my Mom's basement.
