I prefer the 6550’s in these amps, but sounds like you might like the cut of EL34’s more? Either way, these few years (78-80) are some of the best amps.
I usually do but I'm going to leave it for now. I have lots of EL34 amps.

Now I either need to fix my SD1 or get something to push it. What's that VFE with the hi pass and lo pass filters?

My 1979 2203 that I bought in 1985 has the serial number on the front panel. Amp had 6550's stock, I switched to EL34's and Gold Lion KT-77 in the 90's and I went back to 6550's when I swapped out the KT-77's. I agree with Psychodave I love my 6550's in this amp, next up is the Sylvania 6CA7. I'm just not an EL34 person, I've tried them many times and they are just not for me, I thin it was because I cut my teeth on my 79 Marshall with 6550s and that was my ears are tuned to.

I would also venture to say that the ohms selector has been upgrade to the newer style. My 79 had the old plug in style with the two prongs with the ohm value script that shown through the little window. The newer ones are better so win /win.

My amp with the power transformer had 454DCV at 120ACV. Be careful soldering on those circuit boards the traces lift easily.

My 79 in stock form was an aggressive beast that put many a JCM800 to shame, congrats on the find Spider.

I think you are reffering to the VFE Dragon. A good ole SD-1 or Maxon OD808 also sound great with these. I also used a yellow MXR distortion + and it paired well with this amp.

I love the standout with the stock 6550 JMP’s. It just tightens up everything and adds that mid cut. They are hard pedals to find though.

New face here. What would be the best forum to post pics of an Ibanez guitar and get a solid reply as to its identification.. I Can’t find a serial number on it?

Like new…
Congratulations Spider.?
These Amplifiers, in my opinion, are some of the tightest and aggressive JMP Marshalls…
Enjoy!!
Thanks!

I thought it was a bit strange when I played it at the dudes house (with a freakin original '67 Trini Lopez!) that is was kind of dark and not very gainy. Then the same at my house. However plugging into the High input felt like peanut butter. So I sprayed some Deoxit on some Q-tips and cleaned them out and then gave the actual gaps a blast and it made a huge difference. It's still not a head slicer like some I've had that you couldn't dial out, but it is nice and cutting as this circuit should be and has more gain that it had before. But it's not super tight. I cranked it thru the PS2 and getting the Master up in the 4.5-5.5 range really thickens it up without adding any flub.

Somewhat tempted to JEL it but I'll just try some boosts first. An EP type boost isn't really working.

The VFE Dragon, vintage or newer SD1, and my go-to OD1X sound killer in front of any and every stock Marshall I’ve owned.
