... Anal de Pustule...

I think my interest in them has nothing to do with the gimmick.
Hey brother, my question was clear and pertained to whether or not we'd have heard of them / be discussing them were it not for the gimmick.

I've known about math rock for decades and appreciate that there's an audience out there, but it's extremely-limited in number, relatively-speaking. Have we even had a math rock thread here before? I'm sure you see my point.

There's been the odd math rock song here and there that I've actually really liked. The only issue for me was that my personal hit : miss ratio was about 1 : 12 or worse.

Here are 3 of my faves from back in the day. IMHO way-more creative and listenable, albeit gleaned from possibly 100 clips I had at the time:

I appreciate the guitar-amp tones in this one and the vibe:

This one's the debut song of an idol group:

... and its follow-up single - ridiculously-ambitious, smuggling in Queen and whatnot, but full credit for the effort:

Well, it's a broad category.

Generally IMHO you're looking at unusual time signatures and unpredictable chord progressions, to distil it down.

Someone showed me a video of these guys a month or so ago on a different music forum. I was impressed by the ability to remember and accurately reproduce and execute that music. Not running out and buying the CD or anything, but credit where it’s due.

Indeed.

In that vein, I've found a lot of math rock to be more gymnastic than musical.

The examples I posted obviously had a more-musical bent IMHO. That's just how I roll. How's the old saying go? "Rhythm and melody".

Wow, didn't know math rock was such an established thing. Is it fair to say it's more motive-drive or rhythm driven than melody driven?

I got $1 that it is 2 of the dudes from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard...

The guitar player moves in very similar ways...

Strange to see that spiral of ancient becoming modern in many topics, and music is not an exception. Instead of growing their fans and progressing in their music, I feel like they are 'made' to be popular and be put everywhere (by an invisible authority) I look. Now I cannot unsee them. This makes me biased, I cannot even listen to their music without thinking 'someone wants me to listen to this'.

Yep, 100%

This is exactly why it's so irritating when the people around you are all

It's like watching "the machine" get behind some retarded local band, banking on the fact that most people don't go to local shows so this will seem "novel" to them

Exactly. That image above is perfect haha

Here they are without the stupid makeup and costumes in their previous band. I'd rather be forced to go to an Agriculture show than this crap.

What a pile of shit.

Yeah, as soon as I heard their clown version of the band, I knew this is exactly what they are

They sound like a million local bands I play with literally every fucking weekend in dingy clubs and smoky punk bars.

They are the literal definition of banal as musicians. It's JUST that they wear clown costumes and play WaCkY instruments so people think they are "fresh" because they've never been to a god damn punk show in their life.

I'm not surprised they couldn't get a bassist playing trash like that. I'd rather do bad Fleetwood Mac and Tom Petty covers....

There's this local band called The Nightmares that we play with all the time

They are playing the same sort of thing as the early Anus Poutine, and literally a million times better and more catchy, even with the same punk screaming

I don't think people realize how many fucking bands there are out there. And how many good ones - better than the shit crammed down their throat like Anal Pustule

That's nothing like Anus Pro-teen because it's actually listenable. I tried a microtonal guitar once and quickly realized how pointless it was. Funny, because the dude who owned it was a dope too. Probably loves Anus pro-teen.
