Don't you love a NICE Strat tone?

Love me some John Mayer. Been playing my strat and working on a D-style amp lately more than half likely due to that.

While Mayer has good tone I've never really been into his tone. Too squashed for me. Wierd mids for sure.
Part of it is his style. Don't care for his small vibrato.
Just a preference. He's a good player.

Hey Joey, I love a nice strat tone like no ones business but my idea of nice Strat tones has nothing in common with John Mayer. IMHO, hes quite possibly the most overrated player in history; a dime a dozen bar player that got lucky. He should thank his lucky stars that anyone knows his name at all...

Quoted for truth. He is utterly boring in every regard.

Whoa. Hold up there fellas. While I'm no Mayer fan and could care less about his guitar playing he can craft a very good acoustic pop tune. I think that is his strength.

Although I will say that his voice is like ice pick in the ears. :aww:

I think that he had a few winners in the acoustic pop but even a broken clock is right twice a day. John Mayer is scant more than a marketing construct by people more talented than he is IMHO

There are very few "popular" bands out there today that weren't marketing ideas. Even a great band like Black Country Communion was "put together".

Strange isn't it? I miss the days when a group of talented guys just got together for fun and bashed out some great tunes and word got around.

Im not denying that but in BCC's case, it was win win due to the talent involved and it was about music first, not marketing demographics like Mayers case.

I'll tell you who's a good strat player: ROBIN FUCKIN' TROWER.

"Bridge of Sighs" is a criminally underrated album...

He kicks everyone's ass that's here.

Not True but thats just your opinion and my opinion

He tours the world, bangs as many chicks as he can get in a hotel room, a huge house in the hills, a tight as frogs ass band that he allows to back him up, did I mention sells millions of records, hangs with celebrities

So does Justin Beiber and whole host of other acts. Thats has no bearing on anything , least of all is it a measure of talent.

He made it. As much of a glorified bar player that got lucky (or so you say) , he fuckin did it.

As soon as he got the power to run his show. He picked up a strat and started tryin to be Hendrix.
I HAVE to respect him for THAT.

Youre welcomed to respect whomever you want for whatever reason you want. I, on the other hand, Dont and wont..

But I still hate his guts and think john fruiscante can play circles around him on a strat.
John and an endless list of musicians and acts that actually have talent...

Everyone has a right to their opinion - and I respect yours. I'm not a John Mayer fan, but I do think he has a lot of talent; both in songwriting and playing. The tone and execution of the live version of "Gravity" is killer - in my opinion. I will say this, if he's a "dime a dozen bar player", I'd love to hang out in the bars that you do. Here in my little mid-western cornfield, we have some great players, but scant few could touch that level of playing. Maybe that's just a sad comment on the music scene here...

+1

THIS is good strat tone to me.

I like THESE strat/tele tones.

And Mayor is the classic case where a guy gets popular for his gay pop songs and it elevates his guitar playing. He would not have gotten anywhere on his guitar playing alone, he needed his Dave Matthews wanna be voice and gay songs to get all the fat chicks to like him. :D

of course, but not this.

Gales and Sayce annihilate this guy

Cant argue with Eric Johnson, saw him live in GA - monster tone from the marshall/fender setup he uses
