I don't understand the JM dislike. He is a monster player with monster tone and has a voice that makes women melt. I wish he was my son and would give me lessons on the stuff he learned at Berklee. Tomo Fugita is one of his teachers. Tomo has stated many times that JM is a great player and a great student.

I'd like to see one of you guys sing and play Ray Charles "outta my mind" like he does...

Please post for us... :gethim:
i got nothing against JM's songwriting and chordal arrangements for tunes. He's successful and accomplished. He's a great musician, good player and pop songwriter. BUT his vocal approach/sound is completely taken from SRV 100 percent. Nothing original which ever one claims he is. If u were to blind fold me i would never guess it JM playing...EJ, Gales, Sayce.....right off the bat! I think what the dislike is the fact that he is so famous ( which is awesome!) he also has the masses convinced he's the top dog in that genre of blues guitar playing. and he comes off as that type of person. This is where it's different IMO...I 've seen John Mayer live and I can guarantee u, for one guy, Eric Gales can shit more talent on that instrument than he can and improvise musical ideas on the spot till the cows come home and JM would be cupping his balls during a live jam. Its not even worth a debate. but he's an unknown to the wide public. i dislike the hendrix stuff JM does, he's so "white" .
With the exception of great musician and player, I agree with just about everything above..

This is all subjective of course but I stand by everything that Ive said. Im sorry if Ive offended that JM nut huggers.. well, not really

just42Dave, Trower horrible, no comparison to Mayer? Really??? LOL!!!

Philip Sayce is a massive over-player IMO. Yeah dude, you can play, we get it.

I too have never understood the Mayer hate and when people call him average and even below par it really makes me wonder what they're hearing. On what planet is the Continuum album either of those things?

When I hear people call him a Monster player, I don't get what they're hearing. Accomplished pop-star? I'll give you that. Monster guitar player? IMHO nope.

The thing is, whether or not you think he's a monster player is all opinion. Besides, I was referring to him as a whole package and not just as a player.

I also find it objectionable when it seems like being a "pop-star" makes him any less of an artist. Being such isn't something to be ashamed of and calling him it doesn't diminish his talent.

Different Strokes for Different Folks. I won't bash Mayer as an artist because he's a successful at it and worked hard for it, but his music doesn't move me. Another thread of pure subjectivism.
I'll take this over Mayer any day, but thats my taste.

Overplaying is purely subjective too, although i dont hear a lot of it on this live clip. its artist's point of view whether its overplaying or just letting music flow through you through personal expression.

Strats are the pinnacle for me. I love a good LP or tele or whatever too but strats are IT. I gleefully swing from the nuts of all mentioned in this thread, including Mayer. And like it or not, it's songs and image that make the mark. That's why Satriani will be remembered over Holdsworth, Eddie over YJM/Vai/Gilbert, Clapton over Trower, etc. It ain't fair but it's life. Or come to think of it, maybe it is fair...I don't know...I don't care, I love it all.

I will throw this on the pile:

Hate away, but I think this is some stellar strat tone.

KU FTW

I think my tastes quite differ from the majority on this board.

But at the end of the day, it's all guitar, and it's all good.

That was some nasty playing and tone!

Can't stand JM.

If you are looking for an encyclopedia's worth of great strat tones, look no further than the man in black.

This was freaking awesome. I must say, these are the types of tones I have really been into lately. Those pickups sound fantastic. Are they low output? I think I need some lower output pickups with a killer fuzz. What kind of amp does he play?

While Mayer has good tone I've never really been into his tone. Too squashed for me. Wierd mids for sure.
Part of it is his style. Don't care for his small vibrato.
Just a preference. He's a good player.

Correct... It's pent up... Just doesn't sing.

joe bonamassa at 16 had an amazing strat tone!

eric johnson circa 1986-94 was amazing tone!

I'll be the first one to say vince gill has a great strat tone!
