Gales and Sayce annihilate this guy

Sayce is killer, seen him a bunch of times, great player, great singer, no question in my mind who is the better player/singer. But... he doesn't have the songwriting chops Mayer has as far as hits go though unfortunately. Which is why I've seen him play to like 5 people at Molly Malones while Mayer plays stadiums, I agree success is not necessarily a great indicator of talent.

Hey Joey, I love a nice strat tone like no ones business but my idea of nice Strat tones has nothing in common with John Mayer. IMHO, hes quite possibly the most overrated player in history; a dime a dozen bar player that got lucky. He should thank his lucky stars that anyone knows his name at all...

I'll agree with the tone part of this, as I always found Mayer's tone a bit on the thin side. But from a player standpoint, he's well above average. Overrated is kind of funny as he wasn't even marketed that way...I don't think people even knew he was a "player" before the third album unless they had been to a show or until the DVDs started dropping. He got "lucky" because his first two albums are great.

Oh, but it IS! Success is a great indicator of the talent of appealing to a mass audience...

Well said.

I will come right out and say it.

I think he has written some great songs, and also performs them very well. I wouldnt listen to him 24 hours a day, but I couldn't do that with any artist.

He is doing a great thing for guitar playing. He might open doors for people who would otherwise never have been relevant.
To me, the videos I have seen, he executes his music with respect and professionalism. There is something natural about him somehow. And that is not a common feature. No matter where you are.

I wish my strat sounded like any of those mentioned. Right now it sounds like a turd hitting a fan. :(

Yes, I do love a GREAT Strat tone and player...for instance:

I hate john Mayer with a passion. But I will tell you this. He kicks everyone's ass that's here. He tours the world, bangs as many chicks as he can get in a hotel room, has Stevie Ray Vaughn's guitar tech, his own custom Fender guitar model, a huge house in the hills, a tight as frogs ass band that he allows to back him up, did I mention sells millions of records, hangs with celebrities, can make one phone call to the fender custom shop and get anything he wants. Can get endorsed by any amp maker/ gear manufacturer in the world (cept Diezel maybe) .

He made it. As much of a glorified bar player that got lucky (or so you say) , he fuckin did it. And when he got there, he made it all about a bluesy strat thing. Yeah they tried to make him a poppy little acoustic guy in the beginning, but as soon as he was in control.

As soon as he got the power to run his show. He picked up a strat and started tryin to be Hendrix.
I HAVE to respect him for THAT.

But I still hate his guts and think john fruiscante can play circles around him on a strat.

You have not been listening to some of the cats here, we have some world class monsters that never bowed down to Clearchannel

IMO outstanding strat tones are harder to get than high gain ugg ugg tones.

Saw Sayce open for Paul Gilbert at the Viper in 2007 during NAMM, the man just threw down hard and the tone was ON! Mentoneman was there as well to take in the stratie goodness

Mayer would even give way to those two.

I don't think Mayer is fit to carry Trower's guitar case for him.

I don't understand the JM dislike. He is a monster player with monster tone and has a voice that makes women melt. I wish he was my son and would give me lessons on the stuff he learned at Berklee. Tomo Fugita is one of his teachers. Tomo has stated many times that JM is a great player and a great student.

I'd like to see one of you guys sing and play Ray Charles "outta my mind" like he does...

Please post for us... :gethim:

i got nothing against JM's songwriting and chordal arrangements for tunes. He's successful and accomplished. He's a great musician, good player and pop songwriter. BUT his vocal approach/sound is completely taken from SRV 100 percent. Nothing original which ever one claims he is. If u were to blind fold me i would never guess it JM playing...EJ, Gales, Sayce.....right off the bat! I think what the dislike is the fact that he is so famous ( which is awesome!) he also has the masses convinced he's the top dog in that genre of blues guitar playing. and he comes off as that type of person. This is where it's different IMO...I 've seen John Mayer live and I can guarantee u, for one guy, Eric Gales can shit more talent on that instrument than he can and improvise musical ideas on the spot till the cows come home and JM would be cupping his balls during a live jam. Its not even worth a debate. but he's an unknown to the wide public. i dislike the hendrix stuff JM does, he's so "white" .

John Mayer is really upset that a bunch of wannabes and never will be's are ragging on him on some Internet forum.
