Strats are the pinnacle for me. I love a good LP or tele or whatever too but strats are IT. I gleefully swing from the nuts of all mentioned in this thread, including Mayer. And like it or not, it's songs and image that make the mark. That's why Satriani will be remembered over Holdsworth, Eddie over YJM/Vai/Gilbert, Clapton over Trower, etc. It ain't fair but it's life. Or come to think of it, maybe it is fair...I don't know...I don't care, I love it all.

I will throw this on the pile:

This was freaking awesome. I must say, these are the types of tones I have really been into lately. Those pickups sound fantastic. Are they low output? I think I need some lower output pickups with a killer fuzz. What kind of amp does he play?

To my knowledge that is a stock '60s strat into probably a fender amp. Although he uses fenders, marshalls, and more.

Knopfler is friggin Awesome and a great example of incredible strat tone if there ever was one. I dont think that hes over looked here or anywhere.. If he is, its only because people bring up pogues like John Mayer LOL!!!

I was in the mall a few years ago..was bored, picked up a rolling stone in the book store...they had a list of the new top ten list of most influential guitarists...generally I think those lists are shit..because they're written by people who know nothing..and I was proven right when Meyer was at or near the top of the list....followed by another 9 guys that also made me chuckle...I think Dave Navarro was on the list too....talk about seeing genius where there is none...

How about Los Lonely Boys "Heaven"?

I can NEVER get the damn You Tube links to work since they took the sticky down, so I didn't even try...

That white strat's a '63, I've seen him play through a bunch of amps, locally I've seen him use these amps which are apparently mystic mother amps but he definitely uses a super reverb too, and I've even seen him playing through two twins cranked up full at a namm fender gig thing a year or two ago that was painfully loud, lol.

But I do love that Fender Glassy Twang you get from a Stratocaster.

Andy had great tone during the brief reunion in 86 with his old rig and plexis, his tone on the reunion tour with CAE stuff left me ugh..................

About Sayce he has custom amps by someone that is excaping me but they are dumble influenced.

See my post above they're called Mystic Mother amps, made by a guy named Tommy Cougar.

I saw the post but I could have sworn I hear some other builder, I could be remembering out of date info though.

Or I could be thinking of some other guy, this happens after 4 20oz margaretta dinners

Ooof. 4 20oz margs will def do it , lol ;)

Fwiw I've seen him play these amps multiple times though, it's def possible he plays other stuff too but they're definitely dumble-ish as you said. I actually assumed it was a dumble initially when I saw him playing them but they're not.

There's some pics of the production ones in this thread:

I was a LP guy for the longest time, but switched to strats a few years back. Something about them just feels right to me. Very comfy and a bunch of different tones are possible. Sayce is a killer player...love his stuff. Can't beat Beck, Gilmour and of course Jimi either.

Wow, I didn't know he had custom-made amps now. Thanks for that, and to '63 Strat for the extra info & photo.

I LOVE Andy's guitar tone from the early early 80s. When I see folks rabble on and on about Fender Twins & booteek combo amps and say Marshall Stacks are just for 'metal-heads', I just go back to that particular interview clip with Jools Holland- INAYAFACE!! :gethim:

I missed seeing The Police when they did the Reunion Tour. Although if Andy's guitar tone was rather lacking & didn't have that "juice", then quite frankly I'm glad I wasn't there. I read somewhere that he was using a Mesa/Boogie TriAxis preamp and had CAE cabs? Hopefully they'll play again sometime and he'll run that Electric Mistress flanger & Echoplex with either these Mystic amps or the pair of Marshall Plexi heads.

Re : Keith Urban......that sound is so pure, love it love it love it.

I can take or leave Mayer but am not in the haters camp.

Just recently picked up a 2011 American Standard Strat and am totally loving it stock. Usually I'm playing an LP or Axis so its cool to branch outside the usual rock stuff I do and having a Strat has put me on that path........

Hey Pete,

Just to clarify, Digital Jams and I were talking about Phillip Sayce using mystic mother amps not Andy Summers. I saw the Police reunion tour when he was using mesa, honestly thought his tone wasn't great and while I *love* the Police, thought Andy was trying unsuccessfully to do some guitar hero things that he couldn't quite pull off.

For the re-union tour Andy was using a CAE-100 and a bradshaw pedal board/rack into Mesa 2x12s, IMO it just was not the same tone he had in the 80s.
