I totally get where you're coming from. I think it's just a whole different genre and approach.

We are coming more from the school of pentatonic / blues based riffs on concert tuned, traditional guitars and called it a day with that. These kids grew up with Nu-Metal and 7 strings, so their sound evolved from there.

Similarly to how many 60s guys talked shit about EVH and didn't get what he was doing. We are talking shit about the new generation. It's a 20-30 year cycle.

I can understand the craft in almost any genre of music, including dozens that I loathe listening to. That isn't what it is. This ("Modern Metal") has slathered on layer after layer of bandaids used in other genres, taking the wrong lessons from each one until it has become a frankensteins monster of completely fake garbage.

I agree on most points. I HATE that all modern metal uses the same presets, the same amps, cabs, the same drum samples at 100% velocity constantly. Drives me absolutely nuts. I actively avoid most metal from 2011 onwards as it doesn't really do anything for my ears.

I just don't feel telling young people what they like is shit cus I hated being told the same back when I was a younger player. Ironically it drove me to be more relentless

I never had that experience that all of the 80s guys seem to have as a collective memory where there were old guys saying "that new shit sucks" I guess - so it doesn't feel like a cycle to me

I grew up in late 90s and 2000s, and the meta was dominated by a different ethos, completely - most of the "influential" players as far as leads were already multiple levels removed from like, yngwie and the pentatonic stuff was already considered passe enough to where it came back into style in a retro way

I honestly believe that there is a huge difference between hating something because it's newfangled and hating something because it truly sucks

Most people, this forum included, seem to have a very difficult time actually discussing the music itself and how it does or does not fit together. I think they can, but it's just not in the cultural zeitgeist and so they're not familiar with much music critique beyond whether or not they like it.

When the ACKSHUALLY crowd pop I just explain that I don't like modern metal core in the same way I don't like Olives. It doesn't bring me joy, so I don't consume it.

This isn't a personal dig at you or anyone else, if you are a "gotta tune lower" guy

But in my experience people who constantly tune lower and lower do it because they can't write riffs worth a shit

It's a crutch that is constantly used to create the simulation of "heaviness" because the actual riffs aren't heavy and don't have the juice by themselves

I am a tune low guy myself. I play in drop B on my low tuned guitars because alot of the bands I was into tuned to that so I wanted to play along with them. Then I started writing in that tuning.

Playing a bunch of 0's on a low E doesnt hit the same as a low G. (thats what they believe anyway). But you gotta come up with something more interesting than a bunch of 0's so I agree with you there. You cant really play cool riffs on super low tuned guitars because it sounds like mush. Thats why they jump through hoops with post processing to get it to sound clear but then the whole mix just ends up brickwalled
