cool, I've had 3 5150s over the years...good little amps but I'm ready to move on to something new lol

so here's another wacky question. Mesa Boogie Forumla preamp...with the gain dimed on that thing i remember thinking that not only was it not nearly enough gain, but that it was actually making work harder with my left hand to make up for the lack of gain and i was also digging in with my right hand to hit the strings harder to get a louder signal. it other words where i was used to not having to try real hard to slide a 5th chord from say 3rd fret to 5th fret, i was having to dig in pretty fucking seriously to get it to work for me with the lack of gain. could you see me having a similar issue with the mark III?
my money is that i wouldn't, but I'm just trying to be overly thorough

The Formula pre fucking sucks. It's only good for clean tones, and even then, there are a plethora of preamps that are way better.

Edit: Yes, the Mark III can do that LoG tone without a problem.

i'll have to agree, i should have known better than to get the formula but i did. that said, it did have beautiful clean sounds. but, as we've been over in this thread i could care less about clean tones. f

well fuckin a i think that pretty much settles it, i just need to dive in and get myself a mark III

who wants to buy some gear? :D :D

The Formula stock does suck, but there is a mod out there for it that's just switches some resisters and it supposedly adds a ton of gain to it.

yeah i read about that mod after i got rid of it years ago....oh well.

My Mark III head is a red stripe. I liked it so much and was in the market for another (still am). I saw a green stripe head come on ebay last week, with an auction and a BIN price. A couple hours later it was gone!

If you go for the Recto, pick up a Tremoverb, thought I wouldn't like it, but WOW, great F'n amps.

+1!!

Trem-O-Verbs have a mojo other Mesas don't have. The BEST of the rectos in my opinion. Plus you can get a great one for around $1K now!

with everything combined...

i should head for a MkIII, low tunings and not wanting to boost for a metal tone.

examples of unboosted recto tone: Early korn, early limp bizkit.
metallica (black and load but it is mixed with ada's and mkIVs)

between the buried and me use rectos but they boost them.
dillenger escape plan uses rectos and boosts them.
Killswitch engage used rectos and boosted them.

LOG is a great example of heavy Mark tone.
old metallica is another one of a severly scooped mark tone.

Mark tone is more unique because it hasn't been massly recorded on most modern cds like the rectifier has..

and the ONLY similarities between the amp is the bass knob, meaning you want to keep it low ish...

I have never found another amp that i eq the same way i eq a rectifier. VERY VERY interactive mid and treble knobs.

i've owned a quad pre and a dual rectifier.
