Not much high end stuff moving in classifieds these days...

I have an amp up on another forum for 50% of its new price, and the last guy that messaged me wanted me to take less than that, so he would lose less money when he sold it later...

George Carlin once posed the question (paraphrased...), "Why is my stuff shit and your shit is stuff?"

Just a market cycle. Just like everything else. It's a buyers market.

I disagree with this. I think it's more than a cycle, I believe it's the new reality. There are far less people playing nowadays and not many trying to take it up. Prices on new high end gear have peaked to the point that no one wants to buy the stuff and the used market is over saturated. People are really taking a hit on their resale value now, that is if they are even able to sell it. And, there are so many options for affordable new gear that people don't feel the need to spend more than a grand for decent, no-frills guitars, such as PRS SE/S2 lines, Carvin/Kiesel, Charvel, just to name a few.

I've got one high end custom guitar (Suhr) left that I need to go ahead and sell and I'm done with $2K+ guitars...it just ain't worth it to me anymore. But, I already know I'm going to take a huge hit on it, that is, if I'm even able to sell it. You just don't hardly see gear move anymore, but you sure see a lot of trading because of it. And, I think it will only continue to get worse as time goes on.

This may all be true, but the Uberschall still makin' people do crazy shit tho.

Every buyer wants a good deal to them. Every seller wants a good deal to them. See the irony here?

Im in the opposite situation, i have cash and wanna spend some money but cant find the guitars im looking for at a reasonable price, im not looking to lowball or anything like that, i seen one of the guitars on ebay but the dude seems like his price is a bit too high imo. I see nice deals and people trying to sell stuff for very good prices and not crazy, but no deals on what im looking for.
Stevek had a mx250 for a great price but i missed it the other day.

Esp mx250 black or snow white
Esp jh-2
Gibson vos john sykes lp

Im looking for any of these in mint condition.

I know that feeling too. Good luck on the Sykes. That's kind of a rare find.

I had one years ago and it was awesome, i never should have sold it but somebody made me a offer i couldnt refuse and i was greedy and sold it.

Been hearing that since 2008.
Nope.
The economy is fucked, cost of living is going up while salaries have stagnated, real unemployment numbers (including those that have given up on looking, and those those that have not applied or do not qualify for unemployment insurance) are high, job security in less skilled fields is more sketchy than ever.
It's not even a buyers market.
It's not really a market.
People are broke, or running super lean, and worried about the future so luxuries like gear are taking a back seat.
Hell, I think I make on OK living and i've been trying to sell gear left and right just to pad up the emergency fund.
This is the new status quo, and you better realize it.

Could be a silver lining for some. Cheapish stuff seems to move fine so unload that box of pedals you don't use, empty that drawer full of pickups you forgot about, sell those speakers sitting in boxes somewhere and buy a nice Chubtone or a head that's selling stupid cheap (or whatever melts your butter).

An quasi-related side diversion; Why would you spend $5k on a guitar that you only play for a few hours and then sell? Especially if you're aware of how the market is working at this moment?

Perhaps you should increase your asking price and let people talk you down to your $4200 number.

Me too. There's things I want, like an Axe FX XL, but they're all over priced. I'm not paying $2k used for something I can buy brand new for $2250. The $250 difference doesn't mean much too me. They act like I'm low balling if I offer less.

Hmmm...this thread made me peek into the classifieds and I saw something I want to buy but I can't! I have to have 50 posts to be able to respond to the ad!

Like what was already said...life happens...ran into some financial problems. Its not something I want to do. It happens to everybody

Well, I'm ready to drop some cash today and I can't even PM the guy. Time to start spammin' to get my post count up!

something isn't worth what some lowballer tells you it is.

something is worth what a seller will sell it for and what a buyer will buy it for.

This is why it's a buyers market. This literally means that, due to market conditions, prices people pay are dropping and the market is over-saturated which exacerbates the problem. This is what drives down the price of everything, ultimately. A cycle is not determined by a set period of time. It is 100% the condition of the market.

IF guitar based music starts making a comeback - which I think is already beginning to start happening in the background -

IF the economy starts improving -

ONCE we get past this election cycle - which always suppresses consumer spending -

Things might start improving for people like us that buy/sell a lot of gear. We will just have to see.

I want to remind everyone of a couple of years ago when GC was dumping PRS and EBMM guitars like crazy. The market was completely screwed on these high end guitars. I bought quite a few and am now able to sell them for a pretty decent profit even with the market the way it is. Literally, I bought my first Majesty BRAND NEW for under $2k, as an example.

Not just here but a lot of places. Its pretty bad when you have to take such a hit to try to sell something thats worth much more and even then you have a hard time selling it. I have a guitar easily worth 5K in the classifieds...a couple of lowballers and thats it. Just checked Ebay...3 guitars exactly the same...guys asking between $6975 and $7200. You figure you can make a quick sale so you price low already at $4200 and some fuck still tries to knock you down $500 bucks...ok rant over lol....carry on

Here's the thing, it doesn't matter that you think it's "brand new," because it's not. At $4200 you're expecting to get 84% of what you paid new (or what you think it's worth) and that's simply not going to sell at that price point. Put it up at 70% ($3500) and it'll move. Don't like that kinda loss? Don't buy new, really simple.

A lot of people don't realize that music gear is a lot like cars...drive them off the lot and they are automatically devalued. People always "want what they paid for it", but it is a stupid and unrealistic thing.
