My GAWD man!! Uncanny - practically the exact same list as me for the late 70's, early 80's. And I do have to add, in all sincerity, Ace Frehley as well. KISS had a HUGE impact on me as they were probably the most visually "available" band at that time - there was no MTV or the like. It was just radio and records. KISS was popular and made it to the TV because of their schtick, so immediately, as a 6 or 8 year old kid, to see a dude dressed like that with the rest of the band, man, I thought he HAD to be the best guitarist... EVER!!!! Then RR entered the picture after Iommi, RR was and is and always will be "the reason I picked up the guitar".

To this day Zappa, both The Man himself and his son Dweezil, inspire me to continue...

Peace,
V.

PS - what's with all the old posts getting rehashed today??

The magazine Guitar for the Practicing Musician was the single largest inspiration for me to play guitar believe it or not. Just reading the interviews, lusting over the pretty looking guitars in the adds, and looking at tabs going HTF do you read and play that!?! :)

To actually pick up a guitar....Ace Frehley.

KISS Alive II. His solo on "Calling Dr. Love" blew me away. It still does to this day. I'd credit him for bugging the shit out of my parents for my first X-mas guitar in like '79. :D

To actually pick up a guitar, and try to figure out how to get "that sound"....George Lynch.

Back For The Attack's "Mr. Scary" & "Kiss Of Death". That sound did something for me that the VH albums didn't. I love that aggressive rhythm tone. I suddenly became obsessed with Amps. I'd credit him for me being such a gear whore today. :D
yup......this about sums it up for as well.... :D

I'll name bands, not guitarists because at the time, I was paying attention to the songs, not the guitars per se.

Van Halen (circa 1984, I was about 9 years old), Def Leopard, Motley Crue, Night Ranger, Ratt.

Basically MTV when they played videos :dunno:

Ace Frehley made me pick up the guitar. Randy Rhoads made me never put it down.

Started out playing drums, so I can't really recall who / what made me pick guitar up initially. Lifeson and how he played was a pretty early influence. At one point I sold everything and stopped playing entirely for about 6-8 years.... once I got back into playing, M. Akerfeldt was definitely the biggest influence.

Kiss in the late 70's made me want to play drums and be Peter Criss. In the early 80's I got into this band and it was guitar from then on...

when i heard Paradise city by G'n'R through a tape deck at the age of 7 or so , when it speeds up at the end was the clinch for me to want to play guitar

then tony macalpine for a long time

but someone who keeps inspiring me would be Eric Johnson i'd say

For me it was my Dad. He and two uncles were Flamenco players and would jam at my house just about every weekend. My Dad would also play in a "trio" (singing Mexican/Spanish ballads). My earliest memory of my Dad was of him playing guitar. As a small child I remember strumming the guitar as it laid on the couch. I started learning seriously at about 11. It was Purple Haze by Jimi that started me on the path of electric.

Vivian Campbell - Dio - Live At The Spectrum
EVH - VH1
John Sykes - Whitesnake
Yngwie - Rising Force

Noodles from The Offspring. No joke. If I remember correctly it was the riff he plays in the middle of "Pay The Man" that convinced me to play guitar.

Then Kurt Cobain. I used to sit and listen to his rhythm playing all day.

Then Slash.

After that it's a bit blurry.
