Out of curiosity, anyone want to weigh in on why and how so many of the really brutal bands use Marshall jcm800's live?

They sound great either modded or stock with a pedal out front.

I would watch all his videos and see if you can strike up a convo w/ him. He's seemed to have demoed everything. I would also like to recommend an Uberschall. Everytime I get to play one I'm floored at how crushing the tone is.

3d to me is an amp that fills a room at any volume, while not being obtrusive. Something you can almost feel around you while playing.

For me, there are three amps that do this: Diezel VH4, my buddy's Uberschall (#60) and my K Tre.

Take it FWIW

See, wondering if I should just get a jcm800, which can be had used in Chicago for $1k, give or take, and out the Rivera metal shaman in front of it.

I've actually been watching the hell out of the fearedse clips, hadn't thought to ask him straight up.

3D for me starts with Fender clean, and then stays as clean as possible as the gain is upped.

Cornford, Soldano, Wizard, maybe some Camerons = 3D

I love the shit out of the Herbert, but back off 50 feet from the amps and a little old Cornford MK50 sounds about a zillion times better for my ears.

Btw, what uberschall version do you guys mean when you say "older"?

Am I doing it right?

You have to get out of your head the idea of "plug straight in" purity, especially for the kind of metal you seem to like. Their's no rules as to what you put in the front, or the loop for that matter to get what you want. It doesn't diminish a $2000 amp if you ran a boost in front and an EQ in the loop to get what you need. As long as you get what you need. JCM 800's are popular because the mid range control on them usually has a wide sweep and they respond so well to a variety of pedals. Recto's with external EQ's (loop or in front) can sound much better than straight in. If you're on a budget and time crunch I would hunt down either a 5150, JCM800 or a Recto. Choose whichever has the best straight tone you like then have at it with an EQ pedal or OD.

This is what you're after then...

To get that on a budget, i would look at an Engl Savage 60.

Fireball comes to mind as well but that is getting up there. Of course you could skip everything and save for an Engl SE or Herbert but once again you're talking $2,000+ amplifiers here, not 1400 Blackstars or $1000 Randalls like in my previous post.

I do own a 5150, but i think you're looking for something a bit heavier. Maybe look into getting an FJA Modded Marshall - get the "nick mod". Research it, that might be another option you have to save a load without spending a load.

What, no vote for the CCV?
I wouldn't consider the CCV a "metal" amp. It can definately get heavy though.

+1

I'm very impressed with my Engl. I researched for months before going Engl. I'd have gotten a E670 EL34, but I wanted a rack rig. My E850/100 is my first 6L6 rig, very happy with it!

Many recommendations for the Uberschall. Recommended clips to hear the amp?

Guys.... if he can't afford the Herbert, how's he going to get the Natas, Engl SE, etc?

I suggest a cheap solid state amp, Crate GX130V, Ampeg VH140X/SS150, Randall V2, Warhead, RH series... all of those would be great for brutal death metal, if you're going for the typical sound in that genre. With SS amps, you could even try going out of the preamp into the interface and use some IR cabs. I did that for awhile before getting an Axe FX.

I may be wrong but when I think of a heavy crushing tone I don't think of 3D at all. For me, that's a mid gain/clean term. For heavy stuff I think of in your face, punch you in the chest tone.
