You either get stuff like this or you don't. Blind Faith was mentioned and the Live Derek and the Dominos stuff is great.

If none of that turns your crank, you're not missing anything, it's just not for you. No harm in that.

For me, Clapton can do no wrong. He's laid a couple of eggs along the way, sure, but you'll have that when you are talking about somebody that prolific.
I think that both of these sentiments sum up EC for me; Its not for me and he can do no wrong. He's Eric Clapton for crying out loud..

Yeah, at some point you gotta respect even if it doesn't turn your crank. Page is somebody that never did a ton for me. But I'd piss my pants if I ever met him. You're talking about Mt. Rushmore guys here...

All the old stuff mentioned here is great, but I also dig the From The Cradle and Mr Johnson and Me stuff as well. Good stuff. I really dig the DVD that came with Mr. Johnson and Me. There's some GREAT live stuff on his other DVD's as well.

Clapton is incredible and has influenced so may musicians over the years that you can't count. None of us would be playing the same if it wasn't for the Cream stuff and the Mayall album.

I'm not a huge EC fan, but the Derek and the Domino's stuff is some of his best imo.

What's most notable about 60's rock guitar is how they got their tone. You had to crank your Marshall into overdrive to get any sustain. Guitar players nowadays would have a hard time getting by with the small amount of gain under their fingers they had back then.

Eric Clapton and a cup of coffee have one thing in common: They both suck without CREAM.

Even modern-day tweed-amps-and-loafers Clapton is great to me. His singing has gotten better and better with age. And I like the fact that he is still out there working and isn't always just cashing in on Layla. He also has let go of the ego a bit and isn't afraid to do something like hire Doyle Bramhall as a sideman. Lots of guys of EC's stature would not want to risk getting upstaged.

Couldn't agree more. I love his older stuff best but I will go see him live everytime he comes to Belgium. The last time I saw him he had Doyle Bramhall AND Derek Trucks on stage with him. And it was the best I have seen EC play in a while, the 2 'youngsters' were pushing boundaries and EC wasn't just going to roll over and die, he was on fire.

If would also suggest to read his biography, there's a whole lot of inside info in it and a lot of stuff will become clear. The guy has had some stuff to overcome during his life.

I doubt it. Back then they had no choice but the use what was available. If everyone today had to use amps from the 60's they'd adjust. And last time I listened to popular rock, everyone is trying to sound like they're from the 60's anyway.

I read his autobiography and the guy had a fucked up childhood. He was a bastard child of a Canadian and he thought that his mother was his sister until he was 12 or something nutty like that.

To me, the FIRST thing you need to do is grab a copy of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton. STILL the best playing of his career.
