The Dumble of guitars

Hope those people are famous and making a ton of money. That would be like me buying a $35,000 Felder Table saw just to make shelves for the pantry

Are all Ferrari owners racecar drivers? Everyone with an $8000 diving watch a diver?

Malmsteen, Gilbert, Lynch, Vai, Petrucci, Sykes, Demartini, Holdsworth, Satriani, Govan.
All these guys have at least one thing in common.

Yeah, they are all getting paid to play what they do.

Who cares. Buy what you can afford and what makes you happy! Maybe a description of what makes them so good would be cool to hear with come comparisons of other high end guitars. The OP is not a troll so maybe that is what he is looking for. I'd like to hear.

yeah, and it's a good thing doug chose not to endorse and to keep production low. would hate to see the guitars and value watered down.

I've played a few BMs. A friend owns a B2 & I've been able to play a couple of the very early tele models. They're awesome guitars. Pretty loud when not plugged as well. Shame they're not still being made. They're as rare as rocking horse shit now.

All that said, there are plenty of great, first-hand custom guitars being built out of exotic woods these days. If someone offered me the kind of money I see being offered for BM guitars, I'd certainly consider the sale.

Don't know the full story about the business, but i'd imagine if you threw an interesting amount of money at Doug, he'd still build a guitar for you. There must've been some show-stopping reason for not continuing the business. Given how much demand there is for his guitars, i'd imagine he's got a pretty lucrative business there still.

BM is a classic story of Hype.
1) Small luthier builds nice guitars (nothing magical about them though, very simple, but seem to be well-made, but no better than other other well-made guitar)
2) b/c he's a small luthier, guitars are in small numbers
3) emo core bands (in this case namely Periphery and that Misha guy) that want to be unique pick up one of his instruments and say they are the be-all-and-end-all of guitars (for this month/year)
4) hype is created
5) fan-boys, especially on SSO (many of whom believe tone-woods concept is a myth) go head over heels for them
6) hype goes crazy
7) small luthier is small so not many more get made, and eventually sees hes making as much by working much less and decides to milk it.
8) ppl like engage see $$$ and try keep the hype going
9) same guitars are now outsourced to a different company and now don't fetch 1/4 of the previous price. Either Doug had some magical hands and woods and glue or the reality of the situation is starting to sink in.
10) end of story. It all has to do w/ exclusivity. some w/ Picassos minus the genius.

I don't think that's an entirely fair evaluation of BM guitars. :aww: They really are excellent, every one of them unique & hand made from the very best exotic woods Doug could lay his hands on. They were also being played & hyped by several notable artists in the UK, namely Pin from Sikth, long before Bulb was even uploading bedroom-produced tracks on sound cloud & periphery had even been conceptualized. I'd wager that Pin played an integral part in Misha's decision to buy one.

I think you nailed it!!!

I'm not going to from an opinion without trying one. I used to think people that paid multiple thousands for LP's were nuts. Finally got my hands on a historic and realized what I was missing. If I had the cash, I would have no qualms about plunking down a small mint for one now. Complete 180 after owning one, so I can relate to the obsession. Once you find something that feels like it was made for you, your perspective changes.

this

didn't think I could justify $3000+ guitars when I was a young lad, tastes change - and perceived value influences what we play/buy. Look at the PRS Private Stock for example...or $15,000 acoustic guitars - dudes that can afford Blackmachines are living a whole different level of lifestyle than me.

and I could justify some big $$$ for the right LP :D

Dumble analogy seems right. Looks to be a quality product with low volume and an eccentric builder that struck a nerve with some Internet hype.

I've never played one, but kudos to anyone who has one or that can afford to throw down $20k for a guitar. I wouldn't do that, but hey, don't care if someone else does.

I will sound just as shitty through a 20k guitar as a 3k guitar

Maybe they should market them towards Doctors and Lawyers so they can hang them on the office wall next to their 1950's Les Pauls. You could probably get it closer to 100k
