I think an interesting myth is the whole scenario around some of the early Aerosmith albums. It's long been rumored that Joe was so strung out in the late 70's that Steven, or their management had substitute guitar players. It's basically been confirmed as fact, but I don't think anyone in the Aerosmith camp has validated it. I'm pretty sure one of the subs is on the live version of Train Kept a Rollin' because the lead guitar style is different than what Joe typically does.

I'm sure others here can remind me who the guitarists were rumored to be.

Then, there;s the whole warrant thing.

Yeah...if you listen close to those recordings some of the styles do not make sense. As a wise man once said.......you don't wake up with a good vibrato ;)

:|::QBB:You definitely have to be careful how hard you fret/pick with light strings. I know guys that can't use them because everything they play sounds out of tune...they manhandle the guitar too much. Personally, I'd rather not fight with heavy strings, trying to get bends and vibrato out of them. ;)

I agree. i don't like having to "fight" the strings. i'm able to concentrate more on the tone from my fingers and my playing if the guitar's working with me, not against me.

obviously this depends on the player, but when i started playing i couldn't do vibrato (obviously enough), and then, near enough overnight, something just clicked and i had it.

Obviously it improved more and more over time, etc., but it certainly was an overnight thing for me- at least in terms of being able to do it, and not. the improvement and development of it, once i had the basics of it, wasn't overnight, lol. and obviously i was trying to do it (with no success, lol) for a few weeks/months before it clicked.

Bear in mind, this isn't related to the aerosmith stuff, i have no idea about that, lol.

Some of these are hilarious, and I hear a lot of them... I work at a store.

The ones that stick out to me:

1- Only the ones with the dark, non-streaked fingerboard sound good
2- Only the super light ones sound good
3- Only the super heavy ones sound good
4- (in whiny middle aged man voice)... Oh yes, all these (insert brand) guitars have that lack of sustain at the 12th fret G string
5- Can't play Metal on Strat
6- Can't play Jazz on Strat
7- Can't play Country on a Paul
8- Can't Shred on a Paul
9- ETC add nauseum on 5 through 8 with ANY type guitar and style of music

Myth: for a fat tone you need thick strings ...

ever heard of Brian May or Billy Gibbons using 008s?

I used to have have one of those Austin Gold pedals, which I never really liked very much but when the battery was on its way out it sounded great but then with a new one it sounded horrible.

Nobody has mentioned the every famous...

Bass = Tone

TRUTH:

none of this crap matters :D

find what works for you, and to hell with what anyone else thinks, says, or plays

i'd be most of the people on this board would hear me play thru my setup, and say it sounds pretty good...then i could let them play it and 75% of them would hate it
