Keep it man.

I've been trying to get my cousin to sell me his for years.

Try some winged c 6l6 in it,bias at 32 ma, then keep it :)

I've had the combo and head versions over the years (decades?) and regret selling both of them. The 5150 always felt like a 1 trick pony to me, but it's a great metal amp.

Well so far I sold the kemper , so 5150 is safe unless I can unload the Kramer jersey star and ovation double neck . How did the mods improve your tone ?

there's a TON of mods you can do to a 5150, and if you're handy with a soldering iron, they're not that hard at all.

i dont divulge my personalized trade secrets, but i will say, there are three mods that make any 5150 REALLY versatile.
i have them all on push pull knobs.

the NFB resistor stock is 39k. i installed a 500k linear push pull (in is stock, out is modded). that way you can adjust the negative feedback going to the power amp through the PI tube. i honestly dont understand why a variable NFB on just about every amp that can get one. it basically enables you to really fine tune presence and resonance frequency response in the amp.

remove r28 on the circuit board. replace with a 100k or 250k linear pot (with a 10k resistor (called a slope resistor) off the center or wiper). wire the pot into the holes for R28. instead of a stock 47k resistor, you now have a variable resistor (pot) assembly, with a 10k slope resistor to keep the tone from getting too muddy on the low side...and by muddy i mean, i tried lower values, and 10k is about the most audibly useable. this is what i call the low sweep (or what others refer to as the mid sweep)...you can vary the slope resistor to reflect how low of a freqency you want the knob to affect the tone..i like full use, so i put the lowest useable R in there, 10k, at least to my ears.

same with r95. do the same thing above....15k on that slope resistor would probably do the trick even... 1/4 watt resistors from rat shack are fine...i call that the high focus.

there are other mods i did to mine that i wont share, but those 3 mods are pretty common mods to 5150 and other amps.
