Truthfully I love that the popularity of the youtube gear guys. I realize now that a lot of them have monetized it and made a living out of it, it has basically become shitposting for content and views, but they still get the heads up on a lot of cool gear, and a lot of them post demos you'd never see from a manufacturer or dealer. Sweetwater has some decent videos (mostly with Nick on percussion, great demo vids) but they aren't anything super informative.

Entertainment value on a lot of them alone is worth it for me, even though some of the personalities can be grating or seem forced.

The only one at this point I can't stand is Brad the guitologist. Seems like he knows his shit, but most of the videos of his I've seen are him crying about other youtubers or personalities in the business, and it seems like sour grapes to me.

In fact, a lot of the posts on here seem like sour grapes. Probably the same type of dudes in the 80's who wanted to make a living off music but sucked, and got shitty watching other people succeed.

You ever tried to put together a youtube video with the production values of some of these guys? It takes HOURS, and honestly was not as fun as I imagined it to be. Now try doing that 3x a week and keep the content fresh. Good luck.

I welcome these guys, watch their videos for entertainment, sometimes info, never to judge their playing talent levels, and enjoy it for what it is, grain of salt, etc.

Man I’m not even getting paid yet and it takes about 4-6 hours for me to do a vid. Plus writing an original track and all. I have gotten access to some cool stuff and a couple free pedals. Glad I have a good steady gig but I am trying to grow my channel for sure.

Even though I agree mostly with the “not into it” sentiments in the thread I will say IMO Rabbea Massas has become quite a good player. He’s one of the few where I saw a lot of growth over the years. I feel he’s really moved well past Chapman. Plus he’s a lot more likeable. I don’t care for most of these people but with how difficult it is for a musician to make a living through traditional means these days (Hell, it was never easy) and the music industry being what it is, I can’t honestly fault people for using what is available to try and make a living that still involves holding a guitar. I’d rather there be a glut of these people than more “reacts to” video’s...lol
I really feel for all the kids who will never experience getting together and getting some volume happening in a room and feeling that magic when it clicks. Their first amp will actually be a modeler or straight software and one of their parents will already have groomed them for direct to online stardom with their own vanity video’s involving said child.

I agree, I like Rabbea and also think he has grown as a player over the years and is far better than Chapman. I don't think Chapman is terrible, in fact, he's a solid player, I just don't listen to him because personality wise, there is just no draw there. Rabbea comes across more as a fan of gear and music to me so I check in more regularly when i see a vid that might be interesting. I do think that his torpedo tones can be mushy but besides that, all the power to him. Steve T is good for a chuckle and I think has some insane chops. Ola bores me, is a bit all over the place and i much preferred his earlier videos and his playing to anything he has to say about well...anything lol. Most of them are a bore let's be honest.

Yes^ it is time-consuming. Fluff was between jobs and cashed in his pension to go all-in on his videos to make them an everyday thing and succeeded. Hats off to him, that's awesome!

ballsy....but also very VERY stupid if his pension was worth anything. Total gamble with no end game when compared with the value of compounding over time. But hey, if you want to "make it" on youtube.

The Tone King bast getar celebrity evar

Hail to the King, baby!

There is no way Toneking wrote that jam and played it in time lol. I think he told one of his buddy's what the chords would be and then hit play on EZ drummer. He sat back with one of these "bad boys" right here

Danish Pete from the Andertons vids is a very very solid player & cool guy?

YouTube is basically the best thing to come along ever?

I try to limit too much input because it can be overwhelming. I choose a few topics and look for it...so, Rick Graham, guitarmastery(his name escapes me) and I have watched Troy Grady for right hand focus but keep it to a minimum and really try to incorporate and absorb whatever it is I'm after at the moment.

The only time I watch a guitar player on you tube is when I'm trying to learn a song . Then I'm lucky if I can find some one who actually plays it correctly , 365 guitars is usually pretty good but its still nescesary to have the song qued up and check his work.

I have to admit I wish I could make a living being silly on you tube but Its just not me.

As for you tube guitar heros ..........meh ,posers in my book

There’s a guy posting videos basically wherever he goes, whatever he does gear related. I wonder if he ever goes anywhere without his camera. When do these people have time to edit these videos?

When you have an 8 year old kid making 20 million a year(for his smart parents  ) by reviewing toys on YouTube, then obviously a ton of folks are going to try to do their thing to get a piece of the pie. Not everyone has to be a star or have great musical talent or whatever. You just have to be able to have the 'talent' to attract a whole lot of subscribers & then get a ton of consistent views.

Easier said than done obviously......like everything else in this world it will be a relatively small amount of folks who will actually succeed or who will even try. Whether someone is perceived by some to be worthy of the success or not obviously means fuck all

I think I am more ok with youtube guitar/guitar gear guys trying to make a name or making a living off of that than reality TV stars like the Kardashians that in my eyes do nothing but preach stupidity and get paid a shit load for it

But overall if they have useful information and you manage to learn something from them then thats cool to me. I came across a channel recently from a guy who must have a really bitch'in job cause homeboy has some amazing ass high dollar gear but man... he literally can barely play. It's hard listening to a guy reviewing some high end gear while he is struggling to play basic beginner level type riffs. But he has subscribers so if he can do it, anybody with a good job and gear can do it I guess

I feel like I know who you're talking about. Super nice dude though. He does have killer gear and at least he is very open about where he's at as a player. He's changing his channel format up a bit.
