Also, it must be said that having someone else play an emulation of a real amp can frequently sound perfectly fine, whereas actually playing the two will feel completely different. That difference in feel does change how we approach the instrument and how it ultimately sounds.
For example, I write differently on an acoustic vs. an unplugged electric vs. a small practice amp vs. a large amp turned up a bit. When we record, I might use 2 or 3 of those, but I'll actually play the instrument and react a bit different with each setup.
