Far be it from me to tell you how and what you're hearing, but I find it neither synthetic nor "non tube" sounding. It sounds pretty much the same as any of my set-ups.

Gotta agree with this 100%.

I have owned some absolutely GREAT amps and the Axe sounds just as good..... or bad depending how I dial it in.

Is there any way to totally dial out the processed "modeler" sound that it has?
Of course not. Those of us using it like to sound like crap.
What kinda answer you think a loaded question like that will get?

I am just asking. No reason to be a wiseass.
Axe into VHT power amp still sounded like a modeler. I am asking how to dial that sound out of it. That is why I am on the fence between getting an Ultra or a G System.
I've heard great clips of the unit, but they still retain that processed, synthetic sound on higher gain settings.
RRBH

Well I guess you answered your question then. To me it doesn't sound like a modeller...with or without power amp.
Can you tell which of those samples are the miked amp and which are the Axe direct to disc?

As for "being" a wise ass...you asked a loaded question.

The problem I have with that comparison is Studio Magic.
I've listened to all the stuff there and it all sounds great. But as a semi-retarded player, how do I dial out the stuff I'm talking about.
I've heard full CD's done with an old school pod that killed. But it was all in the engineer/producers Magic.
I seriously don't believe that you can polish a turd. Or in studio magic.
I don't know what you mean by sounding like a modeler, if you can define it different I might be able to tell ya.
What I know is that if you know how to get your sound of any amp you can get it out of the Axe. If you one of the guys that dials via fishing for some kinda pleasing tone, it'll be much harder then if you know what you need. If that makes sense.

They can make Ozzy sing in the studio can't they?

Incase you guys didn't catch that last one:
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Transformer Match!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's the *mojo* parameter

You spilled the beans... cats out of the bag

Interesting....

Which way are you adjusting the transformer match? Up, or down?

It is a powerful parameter and most people probably never touch it. Basically it sets the turns ratio on the output transformer modeling.

Cliff is the man! Hey Cliff, can you put in a parameter for quality of lead dress and also tube brand and type? :D

You'd probably have an easier time buying their old tube rigs

I've got a standard and I'm very happy with it

There are only 2 things holding me back from getting one. Time and money. I don't have the funds right now and when I get one I want to have enough time to spend to really dig in. However, I am thinking I may be better to get an Axe-Fx than go for a mesa mark V. By the time I get one there will be a version 2 I bet.

BTW does anyone know have often the firmware is being updated, just curious....

Well, the only way I could get one would be to sell my Bogner, and I'm really struggling with that - so unless that happens I'm drooling with everybody else...as far as time goes, I agree that there is a learning curve but seriously you can have sounds / patches sent to you via email to upload into the unit...you need some sort of basic midi box to transfer apparently. I know for a fact that the XTC Classic patch Jason created is near spot on - "You've got mail" and you've got those tones

If you have a modded Bogner let me know if you decide to sell.

I have a Cameron Modded 101B...but I'm not looking to sell it \:D/

I hate to say it, but the AxeFX is the very reason I sold that Cameron to you............
After A/Bing the AxeFX's preamp to the Cameron preamp through it's own power section.....well you know what happened next.

Not to discount that 101b what so ever, it's a baaaaaaad ass amp for sure. The Axe can get 98% of the way there with the 101b's power section behind it. I've got a early VHT 2/50/2 on it's way (can run 6l6 & el34), so we'll see if it gets me back to that same tone/feel as the 101b power section did.

DAMN!!!!!!

Two guys thinking or flat out dumping XTCs for the axefx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Done fucking deal, I needs me a standard
Get an Ultra. Trust me on this. Once you see what Dweezil did, you'll want the MBC...

Dweezil Zappa just replaced all of this:

with this for his touring rig

He actually uses both Ultras at the same time for some tunes

Got the Ground Control Pro yesterday and think I'm just about there with this rig...the GCP has opened up another World with it..yeah, that first patch is labled Bog Killer

bogkiller.jpg

On another note, I went down to GC today with the Axe and my LP to see what all the fuss is about those QSC speakers and running the Axe into one of them straight FRFR....they only had the monster monitors (15" - six foot tall columns....) but what the hell, let see how it sounds.....

Sounded like ass

I don't know man...it's too far the other direction. Super compressed, really fatiguing (sp) to say the least...not stoked. The cleans were big and huge and stereo, but whatever.

Got home, plugged it into the VHT 2/50/2 and my Bogner cab and all was good again....right back to killer sounds. You need that dedicated tube power amp in there to make it work, at least for me. To be fair, the QSC's I tried were not the smaller versions guys are using and I knew going into that the ones I demoed were not the optimal choice. Also that I needed to put some time into adjusting things for that kind of sound.

For now I'm sticking with the Axe > VHT > Bogner setup.

...and don't forget to turn the cab sims on when you use FRFRs! I did the opposite, using my guitar rig with the Ultra when I got it; everything sounded like the speaker cabs where wrapped in heavy blankets. Then I read the manual (again) and saw that the cab sims were on by default, as soon as turned them off globally it sounded 100% better.

When I got my FRFRs, I remembered to turn the cab sims on again. I tried a few presets w/o the cab sims, and they didn't sound very good at all.

Sheeeit...turns out the QSC six foot tall PA speakers I played through were the total Jackass Jones choice :scared: the sweet spot is about 200 feet from them   The monitors dudes are using with the Axe are somewhat near field ~ 3-10 foot sweet spot...

Hooked with J-Dub today and played his Ultra through his basic JBL Eon's...I was ready for it to suck like yesterday...unfortunately the JBL's sounded insane - just the Ultra plugged direct into the JBL's...I was pretty much blown away how it sounded. We hooked up my VHT 2/50/2 into his Bogner OS2x12 for comparison....there is a difference, but the chunk factor was there with the JBL's too. Best of both Worlds would be to have a power amp and a powered monitor if possible. The JBL's were cool but most of the first reports I've read indicate the QSC's and the Verves will blow those away...I can't imagine how much better they might sound? I would have no problem though playing through just a powered Verve or QSC based on what I heard today. Killer.

I did come home and fire up my own setup and was equally as impressed. Discovered the CAE 3+ amp sim - AWESOME. I'm pretty stoked on this whole thing, it was a smart move for me.
