i see people discuss things i have no clue about with my gear. I have no clue what brand tubes are in any of my amps. I dont know what country the majority of my guitars are made in. I dont know if my Les Paul is chambered. I dont know if my strats are alder or basswood, i know ones black and the other blue. i dont know what the majority of my guitars are made out of. These things among others i definitely should probably know about, yet i dont, and cant say i even really care to know. Its asshole'ism to me. any other assholes out there??

You were posting on HC over 20 years ago and still don't know any of your gear details? I'm not sure whether that's embarrassing or praiseworthy. I guess none of it really matters though certain tonewoods will emit more BTU's if you have to burn them for heat.

I know way too much about every detail of my gear (amps & guitars)! Why? Because circuits, tubes, materials etc affect tone and feel. These things matter if you’re sensitive to tone and feel.

Not knowing what it is that makes you like or dislike a certain guitar or amplifier will cost you a lot of time and money. Even being able to service your own amp or guitar will save you time and money.

If you really don’t care and you’re happy with your rig(s)…then there’s no judgement.

I started reading but was disappointed. I was hoping you were going to say you read people’s posts and give answers without knowing anything and make things up. That would be an asshole move and I suspect makes up a great deal of forums.

I think it really only matters if you buy/sell a lot. When buying, having some knowledge could help you avoid certain gear that would not fit your workflow or sounds bad. When selling, knowledge of the woods in your guitar or the tubes in your amp ensures you get the right value for your stuff.

Shit, until the internet, I had no idea I was supposed to gig with backup amps, tubes or fuses. And then have a backup for the backup. And that 25 watt speakers might actually be 20 watt. Or was it the other way around?

This right here for me. I know what tubes are in my amps because I know what I want to sound like. I know what nut widths are on my guitars that I really like so I don’t buy guitars that have different nut widths. I know I like mahog guitars with maple tops, so that’s most of what my guitars are.

$ is pretty much the only reason for me to know any of this stuff.
