I'm generally in agreement with you. I'm not quite as enthusiastic as you about it for these two reasons:

-solo wasn't Kirk's best (but I admit, it's really refreshing to not hear a wah for once!)
-some of the lyrics are really cheesy

I won't say the mix is bad or the guitar sound is no good or whatever. I also won't say the vocal style is terrible and so on.

I do hope the rest of the album is at least this good. It'd be a shame if this were the "stand-out" song. :)

And I'll go so far as to say a lot of the black album love-it-or-hate-it talk wouldn't exist if *this* were what they did on the black album, especially with all the talk of "returning to their roots" at the time (which they clearly did not).
I wouldn't argue with you one bit. I took a listen and thought it was kickass, but personally, I don't care enough about Metallica to invest much more thought in it. Never a Kirk fan, never cared much about the lyrics in their songs... I much prefer Megadeth...

Uh, No. Slayer lite was never Metallica's thing but they're doing it here.

I also don't understand why people bring up their age as an excuse. There are many bands from the 80's still releasing very good heavy music that shows no lack of ability or stamina. Testament and Kreator just off the top of my head. If they're too old to release good music they should hang it up and roadie for the Stones...

That is a good point actually, even though I like the new song. Exodus, Overkill, Death Angel. All of them have been putting out some good stuff.

One other thing I want to add. I've know a lot of people here on this forum and many of them were from Harmony Central back in the day. Just want to say that love them or hate them, nothing starts a good fight on the forum like the subject of Metallica. :D :D :D
Perhaps it's a good point, but not in the context of responding to me because his point has nothing to do with my comment...

One other thing I'll say - I like some Metallica songs, but I sure don't care enough about them to argue.

Steve

Oh yes you do Steve, you bastard. You will argue with us about Metallica, starting with the subject "Kirk's Wah, what is it good Fah?". :) - Mike (RR)

  Alright you sonofabitch! Kirk's Wah is the only reason anyone thinks he can play worth a damn because it hides his stumbling, bumbling fingers and lack of any phrasing ability!!!

How was that? :hys:

Steve

Everything but the singing and lyrics were solid imho. Considering how Hettfield killed in delivering the singing back in the years (pre 90's) before they sold out (hey who could blame them everyone wants to make more money) this new vocal style and content sucks ymmv!

what"s wrong with the singing? I mean I did not hear any baby's or fire womans in there.

it is a fast, simple, fun song, and better than anything they have done in years.

I was a Kirk fan...in the late 80s. I admit it. :) I had to wrap my head around what more advanced players were really doing before realizing his limits. And he was fine for the band anyway so I didn't feel like arguing "who's a better guitarist" stuff.

My comment about this solo not being one of his best is more of a relative thing. For a few years he was outright terrible, but then again it's hard to blame him when the producer says to not play solos at all. What's the point in keeping up with practice. :) He returned to his form on Death Magnetic. This sounds ok to me.

It's nothing that makes me wanna buy the album, but it's better than a lot of the stuff they've put out in the last 10-15 years. The snare is mixed way too high, IMHO. The problem with Metallica is the well ran dry a long time ago, but they're convinced they're the greatest metal band in the world. They're too stubborn to just quit or maybe separate and do other projects.

Interesting. Put yourself in their shoes. You just sold out a solid 60k seat stadium in about 20 mins, having not released any new material in 8 yrs. Would you think it's time to "hang it up"?

He might call his lawyer...

There is really no way to be nice about this so I will just come right out and say you truly are an idiot.

Either that or you are very ignorant and have not even listened to any metallica in a very long time.

Beyond Magnetic? They did not have one single fast in your face music on there at all. It was pretty much Alt. Rock

LuLu?   I won't even comment on that one.

Death Magnetic? Maybe a couple of fast songs but nothing near as intense as this latest song. Mostly Rockish The Unforgiven type songs.

St. Anger was a joke. Weird, gay vocals and lots of soft rock/experimental type shit. Some kind of Monster   ooh scary. Lame as shit.

Then there is LOAD and Reload which made Metallica seem like a waste of a good LOAD themselves.

If you are into OLD Metallica than yes, this new song seems to be the best release in decades. Nothing else they have released since And Justice resembles old Metallica whatsoever. I am open to corrections but I have listen to them all and you obviously have not.

Not to mention get your fucking genres right. Punk Rock? GTFO

You're the one that comes off like an idiot, ya numbnut bastard. Are you not aware that they have been quoted many times as being partially inspired by punk rock since day one? And, while it's not in everything they do, there are strong traces of punk within the past three releases...particularly in the vocal delivery/and bland lyrics in some of the songs...not to mention, in some of the weak ass song forumulas used. I share the same sentiments as others that have said the past three Metallica albums seem to begin a new era within the band and they all share similar traits. (I don't count LuLu necessarily, because I never heard it....don't consider it to be a Metallica album) Hell, St. Anger took a punk rock approach to the way it was recorded for instance, and then the fact that is has NO solos. If you don't think they have a punk influence in much of their music, than YOU are the one that has blinders on. I'm probably more aware of their songwriting tendencies than you are, ya glorified fanboi. BTW, what the fuck is wrong with you, that you feel it necessary to call someone an idiot just because they have a different point of view than yours? FUCK YOU!!

No I just thought you were a nerd because of your signature and waned to fuck with you. Metallica is not punk. Not at all. Maybe they listen to it and maybe they share the same 1,2,1,2 drum beats but this latest song is definitely more along the lines of old Metallica. This song could have easily been on Kill Em All and wouldve fit right in.

If I were in their shoes, my material would be even worse than anything they've put out since 1990.

I do wish Hetfield or Hammett would try an outside project. I'd like to hear what either of them would do with some different guys.

But, yeah. When you put it like you did, it'd be hard for me to want to give that up.

I loved the song. The past while whenever they played fast it sounded restricted and seemed like it was just trying too hard. This song sounded loose, relaxed and controlled. The sound is great (which it should be given that they have unlimited resources), the playing is together but not overly tight, the vocals have a rasp to them and it grabs me. Is it kill em all or master of puppets? Naw but it's better than everything they have done since load.

I love that people take shots at Lars and his playing, the dude is 52 years old and he's playing pretty damn quick, not to mention playing 2.5 live shows. He's not 25 anymore and the world of metal drumming has comes worlds in the past 10-15 years but he's hanging in there. At 52, I would say he's doing just fine.

Haters can hate all they want, weekend warriors and couch cruisers can talk shit all they like and that's fine but I think people need to just relax a bit.

actually thats probably the truest statement in here

I love the people saying they should retire and do something else. WHY?? they still make millions from just touring, why start from near the bottom again.

Actually they should retire and then the next day announce a reunion tour and say they are just doing it for the money :D

Think it is overall pretty solid.

With that said, I wish someone would go find James' Mark IIC+ and have him us it as his main amp again.

Totally this - with all the kit and cash why can they not get a good rhythm tone. I mean it should be pretty simple, throw on MOP / AJFA / Black and go yeah, now where are my notes from that album :)

I like the tone but think it would be better if he ditched the Het Set pickups. The low end has a bloated sound and sound weird on fast alternate picking and staccato stuff IMO. That's where the 81 shines. You can hear it plain as day on the new track.
