Mr. Scary Mod

The Mr Scary Mod is the quickest and easiest way to get tighter and/or higher gain without added noise. Improves the feel on most amps and has some adjustability with the low end and amount of gain. There is no downside to these. Turn its gain knob down all the way and it adds no gain. In rectifiers its amazing at tightening up and improving the muddy feel, being able to keep the amps gain knob lower. Badlanders become flame throwing chug machines. I have tested these mods (Hotmod EVO2 / Mr Scary / 1987 Caswell) in a large number of amps and have them permanently in 7 of my amps.
For amps that you already like the tone of and just need a good nudge, these are fantastic
How different is the 1987 Caswell from the other two ?

I tried the other two and prefer the EVO2 with a 12AT7.

I always get a chuckle out of Marshall owners - first they buy a multi-thousand dollar amp, then it has to be modded because it sounds like shite, then they use it to amplify a $79 pedal that provides their actual distortion sound :D Then they have to run it in a rig with other amps if they want to play much range of music because it lacks flexibility.

The Legendary Tones mods at least address the need for mods and boost pedals, which is a good start. The SIR #39 one sounds solid IMO. It doesn't address the lack of flexibility but it's a start.

One thing I´m curious about is that I also see these in NMV Marshalls sometimes. Do they all have pre-phase masters added, or are they just really careful with the extra gain to not squash out the PI completely?

Not sure about badlander. Once i figured out what i was doing. I popped it in a dual rectifier. Didnt jive for me.

But in marshall and marshall adjacent amps. It adds some extra oomph that I like. Like a boost that doesnt add a voicing.

Surely you mean 6 drive pedals on their door-sized pedalboard, with 50 more pedals on display on the wall.
These are the idiots that are driving the industry.
They know the price of everything, and the value of nothing.
$4000 pedal-platform amps? Go fuck yourselves.

Meanwhile, I can go on eBay, grab a totally stock 1971 JTM50 for $2000, and jumper the inputs. Give it some Koko Boost, and attenuate the full distorted output down with a Sequis Motherload Elemental.

I go back and forth with mine. Some days I think its cool... some days I don't. It definitely adds gain.

Some days simply aren’t music days.
The human body is a funny thing.

the 1987 is drastically different. Its looser and more out of control with tons of bite. You have to find the right amp for this mod or want that particular sound as its much more heavy handed in transforming the tone. I greatly prefer the NOS 12AT7 in each mod, improves the tone quite a bit. The EVO2, I REALLY like in fatter amps like my CAE OD100SE+, it adds a touch more tight marshall like bite when compared to the Mr Scary, which is just a bit smoother/thicker.

I agree it's about the right one for the amp and sound you want. Interesting about the 1987. I tried a 12AU7 in the EVO2. It was alright. The 12AT7 was the right range for me.

That's also referred to as "Tube Gremlins"
Yeah.
I guess some days are not X-Hamster days either.
It’s a fucker when they coincide.
Usually drives me to drugs.
Then I get horny, and tend to go with it.
The ensuing solo explosion usually clears my sinuses, and the music gear sounds great after that.
So I try and do the drugs and have a wank before playing each time.
Which explains why I’m banned from most music stores within 100 miles.

Great post! This is so true when you scour the day to day on here... I have recently started recording my amps again and I find i am going off the pedal board and just going straight in. If any pedals go on the ground I just throw a wah down with a battery in it or my kokoboost for a tad more mids for leads. All these mods/ gain we love don't always hold up when you mic them. Generally speaking less gain records so much better and can sound bigger on chords.

Koko and occasionally a Wah is exactly when I use. I don’t own any other pedals.
But then, I’m not a screaming bender either - even if I do use Pussy Ass speakers, and my amp is a Pussy Music Player mk1.

Just so i am clear, the wah for me is just for the Schenker thing, NOT the Kirk Wahmmet thing! 😀
