New Malmsteen? Yikes..

I had read a few harsh reviews before finding the actual clip - its not 'as' bad as I had dreaded. I was thinking 'Spellbound' and 'Blue Lightning' ...
Yngwie has a large but not infinite repertoir of 'motifs' that any Yngwie fan recognizes the instant one hears them. Despite the impressive chops and all the nostalgia, the music now just sounds like the way we learned Spanish in high-school: just assembling bases and endings in hope of a passing grade.

Tough - because when I think back to the first time I heard Yngwie in Steeler and Alcatrazz - before the first Solo album, damn. Huge influence. I could never actually play like that - but he so blew the boundary out at that time - sort of like watching Mike Tyson's first 10-12 pro fights.

I really like what he does with a good singer and a live, groovy drummer. I wish he's quit this glorified demo approach and put out another good record with good musicians.

I liked Yngwies first four albums a lot. Then the 5th and 6th were ok to me at best. I still listen to some of his early albums. I also own a fender yjm strat and love it. Its amazing to me. But Yngwie’s music these days leaves me bored. I do applaud him for doing what he likes and loves and not worrying about what others think. His music is his art and although to my ears, he paints the same picture over and over, he loves it. So good for him. I feel the same way about Zakk Wylde these days. Early stuff was great but now the same chugchug squealsqueal pattern song after song. But he loves it so good for him. I enjoy watching both yngwie and Zakk in interviews and all. I think i’d get along well with either of them. Anyway, I respect Yngwie. I wish him many more years of doing the same diminished phrygian harmonic minor this or that whatever ya call it. 🤣🤣

First 4 albums plus fire and ice all you need
Good shit

Yep Yngwie's early stuff and fire and ice are all excellent (and underrated) albums

When he had a bit more collaboration in his bands, the music was incredible

He's also got some seriously amazing vibrato and deceptively subtle technique, even though the TGP hordes mindlessly dismiss him as an aimless shredder with no "feel"

It's funny because you know they have never actually listened to yngwie's music when they say that. His feel is literally what sets him apart from Vai, Satch, and the other 80s shredders. That earthy, organic vibrato, the weepy delay and verb, and the carefully chosen legato notes in his runs give everything a really unique vibe

He’s feel was even more incredible when younger . Even though he played fast he’d let his solos breath and his neck pickup tone on slow shit was so good
But now he’s like on adderal or some shit
But he’s great . It’s the bad choices and like you said he’s better with others being creative . I think we all do

It's almost like he decided one day that people only listened to yngwie to hear him shred, so he was gonna give the people what they came for

Which is sad, because especially on his earlier shit he was a really, really dynamic player with a ton of space and vibe - he did some really Gilmour-esque slow lead breaks in spots, which is hilarious because the TGP hivemind has dismissed Yngwie as a wanker and Gilmour as the king of "feel" when Yngwie arguably does the "Feel" thing even better than him

I agree totally .
And Marching Out is just one hell of a pure metal album . He’s was riffing hard

That's what is really missing from newer Yngwie

He used to have half a dozen absolutely savage, incredible riffs on every album

Just the sort of shit that you would listen to and be like "fuck that how did he come up with that?"

And on his newer stuff you just never hear any riffs like he used to do

How the fuck can anyone listen to that second riff in "now your ships have burned" and not see how his music changed?

edit: here's another early riff that's just fucking awesome

Just both perfect songs fr . His tone on my ships was burned is exactly what I was speaking of

The new single will never be played like this live since he halves all his songs to intro/verse/chorus/solo/end. Each vocal song is now about 1:45 long.
