PWE Event Horizon or Splawn Streetrod?

Fusionbear had the PWE and the Splawn Quick Rod at the same time. He only kept one of them.

The PWE website is lame  No prices, no clips...nothing

What's the scoop on these things?

Really, so you found the Streetrod too bitey as well? I will admit I hate playing bitey amps.....

Then you don't want the Street Rod.

+1

or a quickrod ftm.

Most definitely!

Look, PWE makes a great amp, but it sounds less like a Hot Rodded Marshall to my ears. It sounds closer to SLO/Mesa. That is not a bad thing. The voicing is like a Super Bass on steroids. The clean channel can either be a Fender clean channel or Marshall clean depending on how you order it. It is a great amp, but not what I was looking for.

The Splawn is like a Super Lead/JMP/JCM 800 on steroids. It gets all the classic rock "kerrang" tone that Marshall amps are known for, plus plenty of gain if you need it, a clean channel that sounds a lot like early Hendrix. It has a flexible loop, three button foot switch. But, yes, it is a loud amp. It is a gigging amp.

No offence to PWE, but the Splawn stays together at gigging volume, the PWE gets a little too loose for my taste at the same volume.

This is a clip of the base tone I was looking for:

Guess which amp had it for me...

No offense but the PWE is voiced for V30's period. The H75's are great speakers but not right for this amp if you want loud and tight. Maybe they work well with the Splawn, if so, that's great!

Ted, you make great amps and great guitars. I have the utmost respect for your talent, your amazing clean wiring and engineering in your amps. And, yes, I did try your amp through V30's. In fact, whenever someone asks me what speakers they should use with the PWE, I ALWAYS recommend V30's. Ask richedie in this thread. He sent me many PM's and I highly praised your amps to him. In fact, for his situation, the EH is a much better alternative than the Splawn and I continue to stick to that recommendation. But, I am in a different situation. For MY NEEDS, the Splawn scratched the itch I had. Nowhere have I stated that this or that amp is best, on the contrary, I recognize that each of us have unique needs. Now one thing I will stick to my guns on. The Splawn stays tighter than your amp does at louder volumes. For me, that is a good thing. For others, they look for a looser feel at loud volumes so it doesn't feel like your fighting the amp. That is not a critique, but an actual fact that may or may not help you decide one over the other.

One thing I won't stand for is bashing great amps. Whether Splawn, PWE, etc...

Once again, the PWE amps are amazing, just not what I need at the present.

No problem Carl. Doesn't bother me at all if someone prefers another amp to mine. Only thing I'll say is that your clip of the Particle Smasher was through H75's which sound too woolly and loose to me with my amps.

We'll have to agree to disagree on the high volume part, I've heard the EH up close at some very large gigs and it held up very well. By the way, I think it's borderline dishonest to compare the tightness of a 100 watt Splawn to a 50 watt amp don't you think?

I did not post my clip of the 50 watter for this very reason. I am talking about a 100 watt EH through a Bogner 4x12 loaded with V30's. You make a great amp, better than 95% of the amps that are out there IMO.

That didn't stop Chubtone the Splawn dealer from making it seem that way did it? Anyway, it's all good, play what you like Carl.

I think that was in response to 'tonedog' saying that the PWE 'killed' the splawns he owned....

if all the claims of amps killing other amps on this board were anywhere near true most posters would be playing acoustic

Let me Elaborate-Had a quickrod and a promod. Both were sold after one rehearsal with a band I was in at the time. The mids were very annoying and the cleans were pathetic so Killed was quite the case for my tastes. The Splawn works well for Fusionbear, Steve Stevens and many others so I respect that but my experience is not the same at all. The PWE has a sweetness that lacks in the QR and PM and the mids are not annoying at all. The cleans on the PWE are great and the Splawns- not so much.

I only stepped in when someone said the PWE killed the Splawn. You stepped in after I inferred maybe it doesn't "kill" the Splawn. That maybe a great player (fusionbear) who had both amps in his possession at the same time might have a different opinion than those drawing a chalk line around the Splawn?

So Chubtone the Splawn dealer defends an amp he likes enough to personally own and sell at work and PWE Amplification defends an amp they designed and build. Seems pretty predictable on both of our parts. I would think you would expect your dealers to do exactly the same thing for your amps as I do for Splawn, am I right? Especially if they believe in them as much as I believe in the Splawn.

I have owned a ton of amps. Vintage Marshalls, boutiquey this and boutiquey that, modded by this guy or modded by that guy and in every case, I know there is someone out there who would prefer those amps to the Splawn. As for me, in my house, I will crank the Splawn!

I have no experience with the PWE so I can't really say...I looked on youtube and this brand is sorely lacking for clips..there's one guy I found playing a tele (I think) through the EH...but that's it..

I guess I'm going to have to make some clean clips with my strat and quick rod...the clean channel gets knocked alot..I never had any problems with it playing live...even with high output pickups...then again, I didn't mind using the volume knob on my guitar to sweeten the deal..

It's all good Chubtone. Splawn makes a great amp and find the whole "this amp kills that amp" statement to be a little silly sometimes. Different amps work well for different players.

The only beef I had was that the OP was asking about the Event Horizon, you said Carl had both and chose the Splawn when in fact Carl has never owned an Event Horizon, he had a 3 year old Particle Smasher and there are some differences between the two. In any case even if he did own an EH all it means is that Carl prefers the Splawn nothing more. The same would be true if the situation were reversed. There are tons of great amps to chose from these days, chose the one that works for you and enjoy the heck out of it.

Peace

Ted,
Then I stand corrected and would go back and edit my original post if it hadn't been quoted already in other posts. That Carl didn't have the same amp that is being talked about in this thread at the same time as the Splawn makes me look a bit foolish. Oh well, I wish I could say that will never happen again or that it was the first time. :D

I do apologize for that and do wish you the best.
