PWE Event Horizon or Splawn Streetrod?

Yep, at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference.

One man's darling is another man's doorstop.

I ended up getting the PWE and love it! Also love my Bogner 20th Shiva. I decided to pick up a Splawn Streetrod head. I am going to the local shop, where I played one, to look into ordering. For some reason amps based of the Marshall platform work best for me, better feel. We play from Nirvana than and Mesa Boogie I have played. I play in a 90s rock and grunge band, Matthew Sweet to Pearl Jam to Alice in Chains to Tool. Also my original band is modern Indy.

Interesting, my PWE reminds me of all the Marshalls I have owned over the years, only better! I would place this and my Shiva ahead of a Splawn. My PWE is super tight at high volumes, it actually gets tighter with volume.

Fusionbear had the PWE and the Splawn Quick Rod at the same time. He only kept one of them.

so...are his mids still weird?

Most definitely!

Look, PWE makes a great amp, but it sounds less like a Hot Rodded Marshall to my ears. It sounds closer to SLO/Mesa. That is not a bad thing. The voicing is like a Super Bass on steroids. The clean channel can either be a Fender clean channel or Marshall clean depending on how you order it. It is a great amp, but not what I was looking for.

The Splawn is like a Super Lead/JMP/JCM 800 on steroids. It gets all the classic rock "kerrang" tone that Marshall amps are known for, plus plenty of gain if you need it, a clean channel that sounds a lot like early Hendrix. It has a flexible loop, three button foot switch. But, yes, it is a loud amp. It is a gigging amp.

No offence to PWE, but the Splawn stays together at gigging volume, the PWE gets a little too loose for my taste at the same volume.

This is a clip of the base tone I was looking for:

Guess which amp had it for me...

No offense but the PWE is voiced for V30's period. The H75's are great speakers but not right for this amp if you want loud and tight. Maybe they work well with the Splawn, if so, that's great!

Splawns just don't work for me. The PWE EH3 on the other hand.

I've never seen a pwe, or even heard a sound clip, but I just got a street rod a while back and I've actually been shocked at how good it sounds. I've had three different quick rods and liked them, so I knew the tones it was capable of, but it's not just a good sounding combo its just a really good sounding amp in general. Only a few practices, and one show so far, but so far it's far exceeded my expectations. Will probably use it again tonight.

I will say this.. in the basement by itself it sounds good, but with the band it's much better.

Of the two (I have had both) I think the PWE is more 3D sounding, warmer, richer, more versatile, Splawsn rocks but they alway have this grating high end I could never get rid of. Splawn cleans are only passable, PWE's are really nice, Splawn efx loop eh so so, PWE great loop, Splawns sound best at ear splitting volumes, PWE has a great master.

I agree! my Bogner Shiva and PWE Event Horizon have pretty much killed my urge for a Marshall, Splawn or other Marshally or British style amps. I would still like a Fryette SigX, Mesa Royal Atlantic or Bogner Helios, so in reality...you can never have enough amps. :)
