I'm so jealous. There literally are no metal bands to play in, in my area.

For originals? It's either punk of some variety, or hardcore of some variety, or doom. Millions of terrible doom bands.

There hasn't been a legitimate death metal band in my locale for 25 years. I don't think there has ever been a thrash or traditional metal band.

Last I gigged around ten years ago I was playing a Friedman KS ‘80 JMP through a greenback loaded Splawn 4x12.
Great mod, still retained most of the JMP rawness and bark. Actually had a couple cash offers for it after shows.

And then there’s this version cleverly crafted by my dickheaded friend Russ.

I've done solo black metal records and played on studio recordings on black metal records all over, but the whole point is I am the only person who plays metal here (that I know of)

I've tried to make metal bands for like 30 years dude, its not gonna happen lol

There isn't anyone who actually listens to it, let alone people to come to a metal gig

A Marshall DSL50 has been my main gigging amp from 2002 through 2006. And then again from 2021 through now. I think i have 300+ gigs on this particular amp. In the years in between, I experimented with modded Marshalls, rack gear, a Kemper, and a Bogner 101B--then back to DSL50.

If you have a three piece, it only works for certain styles of music, and also everyone needs to sing, backups, oohs and ahs, whatever, there has to be more going on then just the bare bones

It takes a lot of work for a three piece band to take up enough sonic space, and you gotta be up for the challenge - most three pieces i hear, fall very very short of that

The vast majority of the time, it's just not going to sound like a full professional unit because no one is multitasking with vocals or bg vocals or playing samples with a midi foot controller, fuckin SOMETHING man.

Yeah I sing and play guitar in our 3-piece punk band and thankfully my bass player has a big sound and lots of fills so it works. Still is work, lol.

It just amazes me at the sheer volume of three piece bands who don't account for this

They think they can just have everyone play their one instrument and it's going to sound full, and that simply isn't the case.

You need something: maybe a big bass sound, or the bass player is super busy. Maybe the drummer is super hyperactive with fills and that fills up some space? Maybe the drummer is hitting some cues for background keyboards on certain songs to fill out the sound. Maybe (like geddy lee) the bassist is triggering organ with his feet, or hitting midi some other way. Maybe everyone does harmonies on vocals? etc etc etc etc

If you are a full 4, 5, 6 person band you don't need to worry about this as much

But as a power trio you quite literally have to or else every other original band you play with is going to blow you the fuck out of the water, and your band is going to look like a bunch of hacks that don't know what they are doing

Same rig I have used for 20+ years. Wizard MC100 and 2 212’s (used to be 2 412’s but I got old). Soon the MC100 will be replaced with a MCII 40watt, yeah it is lighter. Not ready to give up the amp and cabs just yet.

Yeah like you said, three piece takes some work. I have mostly played in three piece bands but with a singer, so I guess technically 4 piece. Everything from instrumental fusion (straight three piece) to rock / top 40 covers. We never had samples etc, usually do have 3 of the 4 doing vocals. You have to have players that know how to play in a trio. Bassist needs to be really good. Guitarist needs to be able to craft multiple parts into one, creative with effects etc. I have been fortunate to be able to play with such players. I don’t care to play with a second guitarist. A keyboard player would be great, but there are none around here.
The current band I am in our drummer has a sample pad, so we do use that for some stuff. He plays it mostly real time. Frankenstein comes out pretty awesome. I have my hands full with that one covering all the keyboard and guitar stuff. He plays some samples in the Rush stuff which sound cool too. Been fun.
