What's So Special About A Marshall Silver Jubilee?

I think they have their own sound compared to other marshalls at the time and its a great hard rock sound. I used to be in a band years back where the other guitarist had a slash sig, and I played it lots. Its a bit of a one trick pony, but its a good trick. A couple friends have original jubilee heads at the moment and they're great too. Turn 'em up and plug a Gibson in and you're set.

I'll tell you when my Slash sig gets here in a few days :D

im a fan of the slash 2555sl, i owned one a few years ago and im sorry i sold it, i really want another one.
i owned the dsl,tsl and a couple of jcm 800. i havent played every marshall model made but of the ones i owned and have tried the jube is my favorite.

Now that I have my Friedman modded Marshall, my minty Slash half stack may be going on the market.

i loved the little 50watt black Jube i tried!

i'd rate it right up there with the best of the modded stuff, and even builders. Cameron, Cornford, etc.

I had one of the black ones (2550) for about 3 years. My understanding of it was they had stuff left over from the silver lim ed models so they used it up with these. It sounded good enough that a guy offered me twice what I paid for it, so I sold it. I kinda wish I still had it. It had a nice tight bottom, and good detail in the mids. They were kinda funny about the kind of tube that was in V-1 pos. The wrong one would get a little "buzzy" across the top. Maybe it was just mine ;)

Thats really strange? I had one and I thought it had one of the best Marshall lead tones I had ever played. Really smooth for a Marshall especially with a tubescreamer in front. It cut like a knife in band environment aswell. Mabye you guys just needed to crank them a bit?

I would rank it below my JVM for versatility and my Superbass for tone though.

Haha i have cranked the thing real loud many times and still i couldn't get on that well with it! No matter what, it had this buzzy/grainy top end that you can't dial out. Tried it with about 5 different types of speaker too, all loaded in different cabs and still no luck.

I did find that running in half power mode helped get rid of some of that buzzy top end, but it was only a slight improvement!

Hey guys, my demo on my site was ALL silver jubilee. https://www.myspace.com/downstruck

There is almost no post eq and it's two tracks for the rhythm of just my Les Paul straight into the Jubilee CRANKED in a large room. I mean like almost on ten at full power cranked. The leads are the same but with a maxon 808 as a boost. All going through a vintage marshall cab with greenbacks. Cleans are the Jubilee too. I had so much fun playing that amp that I really want to buy one now. It's a shame gibson made so few. I've had an '88 2210 before and they are different beasts.

i think this amp is one that takes full commitment....the right gtr, crank the amp, the right tubes, the right cab....and came with some gems and some lemons i.e. inconsistancy.

I'm sure you're right man, it's just one of those amps i never got on that well with. I'm more into the gained out/modded Marshall style amps anyway, so the Jubilee/2555 amps aren't exactly aimed at the kinda tone that i go for anyway :)

I have one. It's my favorite Marshall for higher gain even over modded Marshalls. Compared to my '87 2205, which is the closest stock I think, the Jube is less brash; less in your face bright. Less loud too. It has more usable articulate gain than the split channel, but both have a lot.

It's a refined Marshall tone, smoother and with very usable EQ. What's lacking on most Marshalls is the Bass but not the Jube. You can crank the Bass and it won't get muddy but it could be overpowering.
To me the 2205 is more versatile with the seperate clean/lead EQ's and it would be great if the Jube had that, but who knows, it might not sound the same.
The last made with the latest circuit design and the Black Jubilee Series '88- are the best tone wise.

As far as ease of playing, my Jube is one of the easiest most fluid amps to play lead on. And i've had '67's to DSL's. I only have one JCM 800, DSL, '74 SL, and my 2555 left.

The thing that makes these amps special is ironically the feature that most of these amps did not come with or was not ordered.
The Jubes were built around a design that was originally for cabs with Vintage 30s in them.
Most Jubes came with the GT12-75s in them. This caused the EQ to be almost usless.
Believe it or not the "upgrade" for these amps was to order them with V30s in the cabs @ 260 watts vs. the GT12-75s @ 300 watts.
Only then could the EQ create the sound that they were meant to make.
I just swapped out my GT12-75s for V30s in my 2555 and DAMN!
I set it at the half power mode and I become one with the universe!
I can't believe I had this amp this long (bought when new) and did not find out about this.
Like the rest of you I was not impressed that much, but now it all makes sense.

I picture a bumble bee flying around with an ice pick when I hear them. Not my favorite Marshall.

My main amp is a 2554 that I put into a small box headshell upside down for most of my gigs. I'm with Martin on this..this little amp has chased every modded Marshall out of the house...Friedman, Fortin, Gower(sorry Dan), and even Camerons...put a good boost in front and watch out. I have a Boss EQ, mids bumped, and a Fulltone OCD level half and with both volumes past 6, gain at 9 it sounds modern metal through G12 80s. Same setup through G12 65s and it's 80s rock all day. My Eq is Bass on 8, everything else at noon...I did have it for sale recently but came to my senses. Had to fund a '69 superlead..but came up with a different solution. BTW the little combos have a resistor in place of a choke..and I played a Slash sig and it didn't sound as good to me as my 2554..the black combos can be had pretty cheaply..

Used one for a while in the 90s, hated it.

Bonamassa's a DSL guy now anyway, he swears by them.

I saw Bonamassa last year and I was in good position to see his entire rig..not a DSL in sight. If he uses them now at all I'd bet just like MANY others will gig out with the cheaper and easier to replace amp-DSL. I'd almost guarantee he doesn't record with them. They do sound good...but a Jubilee is miles above DSL tone. Too many pros on RT and elsewhere swear by them and I agree. To each their own though...

No, they weren't in sight...they were behind the wall of amps that you saw (most likely a Trainwreck, Dirty Shirley, and a couple of old Plexis). I was fortunate enough to hang out back stage prior to a gig last year...it's an indisputable fact that he used DSLs with a tube screamer on that tour.
