Rhett Schull...

Holy shit, you guys are all right, I just went and looked at the first video on every geartuber channel and they all said it; “Hey everyone, I’m a nobody but I feel my opinion is so important I had to make a Yotube channel that WE HAVE TO DISCUSS!”

Or-

Some guys looked at youtube and said “Ya know, I can keep posting my opinions no one asked for on RigTalk, TGP or TGF and not get paid like everyone else, or I can take that same opinion and say it into a camera and slap it on Youtube and potentially create another revenue stream for myself. There’s no guarantee it’ll be successful, but surely I will feel better about myself in the long run if I apply myself rather than sitting around and bitching about other people who apply themselves while I don’t”

Someone should have warned all those losers that their plan was without merit and all the awesome gear, opportunity and financial stability they’ve brought into their lives as a result of their efforts holds no weight, they would have gotten far more respect just posting their opinions no one asked for about geartubers on forums.
The problem is they get 25k or 50k+ followers, the majority of who are "guitarists" who don't/can't/haven't gigged and don't know what the hell they are doing, who tune in to the channel of a guy that more often than not doesn't actually know what he/she is doing either. Then they repeat bad info to others like it's gospel and the youtuber becomes convinced their opinion is more important because of the nature of having people +1 everything you say.

It used to be hard to find knowledge about guitar back when I was growing up in BF egypt and just getting into guitar. It was painstaking actually. And costly. Now with the world at my fingertips I still find it hard, but not because of lack of info, but because of lack of good info. Most of what is out there is garbage. If you are new to guitar, how are you supposed to sort out quality info from bad info in a tidal wave of mostly garbage vids? In a way, nothing has changed.

It would be one thing if they were actually good at playing guitar. Most of them are mediocre at best.
But no one ever said you need talent or even be likeable to make money on YouTube.

Then there is the shill aspect. Truth is the entire internet is an advertising platform. Rig Talk is an advertising platform.
I think at some level they’re really pissed about the potential of free or reduced gear drying up and/or pissed fender or the other big companies won’t send them free or reduced stuff

Plus the whole victim culture thing. I’m guessing they’d shit bricks if fender started selling guitars that looked exactly like a smaller company’s original design if such a thing exists

Just like the rest of the music industry. You don't need to be talented, just popular. Unless you are teaching technique, you don't need it. Most metalheads tune into amp demos to hear how the palm muted open notes sound. Anything else is a bonus.

If they were any good at playing or writing music, they wouldn't be YouTubers. Glen Fricker is the perfect example of that. What the fuck has he ever done? His albums aren't winning Grammys. He's not on the radio. He's just some fat Canadian yelling at people through the internet. Why would I give a single flying fuck about his opinion of heavy guitars?

"Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

I value your opinion a lot more than Glens.

I much rather have a beer with you and many others on RT.

Rig-Talk has earned a reputation for being one of the more abrasive online communities for guitarists. Discussions frequently devolve into toxicity due to a culture of elitism regarding boutique gear, intense gatekeeping of "proper" tone, hyper-critical behavior, and aggressive political or off-topic arguments. [1, 2]
The volatility on the forum typically stems from a few specific behaviors:
  • Gear Elitism & Snobbery: The community is highly focused on high-end, boutique amplifiers (like Soldano, Diezel, and Bogner). Users often look down on budget equipment, digital modelers, or solid-state amps, leading to condescending replies regarding "cheap" setups. [1]
  • Intense Gatekeeping: There is little room for subjectivity. Long-time members often enforce strict, dogmatic views on what makes "good tone," aggressively mocking opinions that stray from the perceived consensus. [1]
  • Mob Mentality: The forum has a notorious history of targeting both newcomers and experienced players. Users will often nitpick a user's playing technique, tone choices, or gear decisions, which frequently drives competent players away from the platform. [1]
  • Unmoderated Off-Topic Sections: The toxicity spills over from the gear boards into the non-music sections. Aggressive political, cultural, and personal debates are common, leading to flame wars and personal attacks that the moderation team struggles to contain. [1]
If you are looking for other guitar communities with different dynamics, let me know what kind of gear, genre of music, or discussion style you are interested in. I can point you toward a more suitable forum or social media group.

"Toxicity spills over into the non-music forums"

I think it is the other way around.

The main gear section here is hardly abrassive imo :dunno:

If you are new to guitar, how are you supposed to sort out quality info from bad info in a tidal wave of mostly garbage vids? In a way, nothing has changed.

I’m not too concerned about the incoming guitar players; they’ve got a whole world opened up to them of infinite tones for dirt cheap. They’ll figure it out in the opposite direction we did; instead of making whatever gear work for them until they could afford the thing that actually does what they want, they get to start off with ALL the options and eventually whittle their way down to what they actually want, opposed to crossing items off a short list of what was available and affordable in the 80’s/90’s and then saving up for a year or two to buy an amp you’re hopefully going to love for a long time.

And there’s ample guys who have been posting hot takes here and every other forum for years and we’ve never heard a single clip from them.

I’m having a hard time comprehending how posting an opinion in written format without any evidence of playing ability has more merit than posting an opinion in video form with an ample well of playing examples.

That was a plexi 100 watt for me. I couldn't figure out where the gain was, LOL. It only took me like six years of ownership to realize that I could cross channel it after I saw a pic and short article in a guitar magazine.

Because some of us, that have been playing for decades, feel no need to try and base the worth of our opinion by posting videos. That's a phenomenon created by this whole ball of shit the internet created and narcissistic view. I've met and talked to hundreds if not thousands of players over the years, many of whom I have never heard play, but we still talked gear and unless the person was an obvious douchebag bullshitter, I never once considered their opinion null because there was no "proof" of playing ability. There have multiple successful producers and engineers that don't play as well, or at all that still know a shit ton about gear and tone and how to make a good record. Can I play? Yes. But I'm way past the "I'm better than that guy" dick measure bullshit.

the clips I've posted are pretty crappy so that means my opinions and advice are crappy.

Back when Howard Stern was controversial on the radio and people called in to complain, the FCC told people they could change the channel if they didn’t like him.

Turned out, 75% of his audience were people who identified as haters.
People LOVE to hate on other people. It's a favorite pass time activity.

I share the same sentiment about a lot of you here. I'd rather hang/jam/learn from a lot of you all vs some hype clown.

Just last night, I had spent 30 mins writing a response, then deleted it knowing I don't have the accomplishments or specific knowledge to give advice in that situation. I got lucky as a kid, was in the right place at the right time, lied about my age and played out / opened with some big acts. It had nothing to do with talent. It doesn't make me an expert at anything other than learning how recognize ego issues and not argue with bandmates.

As to AI - it is only reading what some half worthless, tan skinny fit pants wearing troll says about rig talk. I've seen a lot of you be much nicer to some people than I would have been. Some people are just coming in too hot and need taken down a peg or two. Not to mention the clowns who programmed AI.
